Position Summary

Brooklyn Park Recreation and Parks Department is looking for a highly motivated and team-oriented individual who has a desire to make a difference in lives of young people in Brooklyn Park. This position works with the Youth Outreach and Intervention Coordinator the Brooklyn Park Youth Outreach team, Cities United, YMCA Intervention staff and the Zanewood program staff to:  

  • Support internal and external partners to provide promotion, prevention, and intervention services to ensure youth thrive in meeting their basic needs, health, social connections, and identity and aspirations and are set up for success 

  • Connect intensive support and resources with vulnerable youth to prevent reaching a crisis stage, and guide youth who are in a crisis to necessary treatment and care management    

  • Reimagine public safety by interrupting the cycle of community violence 

  • Dismantle systems of inequity 

  • Engage youth and families 

  
The Youth Services Division assesses youth and recreation program needs in the community and implements programs that meet the needs of youth in the community. 


The Program Assistant III – Youth and Family Intervention specialist will implement programs for youth, teens and families in the Youth services division at Zanewood Recreation Center and offsite programming. This position will assist with providing work direction to recreation program employees and will also assist with developing positive partnerships with community organizations to increase opportunities for youth/families to participate in positive youth  development  activities.
 
This position will work independently under the general supervision of the Outreach and Intervention Coordinator and is a member of a results-oriented staff that works together to develop innovative service delivery methods and program focused on quality, partnerships and service to our community. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Transforming, planning and managing teen behaviors in Recreation Center and in community 

  • Assess youth engagement needs, identify new strategies for meeting those needs and implement programs and strategies 

  • Coordinate, supervise, develop and implement programs and events for teens and young adults and their families at Zanewood Recreation Center and in community settings 

  • Provide daily on-site and community engagement and support programs that include transforming behaviors, direct service, relationship building, etc. 

  • Partner with police department to deliver youth promotional, prevention and intervention opportunities that reimagine public safety  practices in the community 

  • Partner with the  Brooklyn Park Youth Outreach team in the development of programming and connect services to meet  the needs of youth, young adults and families 

  • Work with  Youth Intervention contracts staff to deliver key life coaching and case management for youth at Zanewood Recreation Center 

  • Serve as the Climate Team lead staff to set a safe,positive, engaging, participatory environment for youth and families 

  • Monitor and respond to behavior, safety and emergency situations; work with   Facility & Program Coordinator? and Outreach and Intervention Coordinator to propose  solutions 

  • Participate with Cities United network webinars, conferences and discussions to advance positive outcomes for young black men and boys 

  • Partner with Youth Services Liaison and National Cities United network to deliver key outcomes of Youth Services Comprehensive Framework 

  • Work with  Outreach and Intervention Coordinator to develop systems of care to meet the needs of youth, including, peer coaching, resource identification and group work 

  • Assist staff with planned activities to maintain healthy environment and assist with preparing materials and supplies as needed 

  • Partner with other agencies and contractors to provide services and programs both at the center and in the community 

  • Ensures Youth Program Quality Assessments (YPQA) action plans are implemented and that all staff is trained in YPQA. 

  • Understand policies and procedures to ensure safe environment exists for all participants; maintain and complete required data tracking and report development 

  • Promote youth, teen and family?activities and recreational programs through various marketing methods 

  • Maintain accurate records (attendance, registration, field trip participation and special events, accident/incident and parent reports) and prepare program reports 

  • Assist Outreach and Engagement Coordinator with program budget preparation and maintenance 

  • Understand, reflect, communicate and assure customers conduct themselves in accordance with established policies 

  • Work cooperatively with all recreation program staff, administrative staff, office staff and other outside agencies 

  • Assist Youth Outreach and Intervention Coordinator  with the recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling and evaluation of staff and program instructors for employees 

  • Develop and maintain positive staff relations 

  • Recommend  performance improvement solutions for staff with  issues that arise based on personnel policies 

  • Assist with the daily operations and support of staff in Zanewood Recreation Center and  Youth Services 

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Education
Bachelor's degree in Education, Youth Development, Recreation and Parks or related field

Experience
One to two years of experience in recreation programming and youth intervention, including supervision 

Licenses/Certifications
Valid driver’s license with a good driving record

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Previous work experience with at risk youth in a recreation setting or youth services 

  • Previous experience working with the public, requiring tact and courtesy 

  • Basic knowledge of intervention and program planning 

  • Basic knowledge of wraparound services and social emotional learning 

  • Experience developing and implementing youth intervention and engagement programs in multiple settings 

  • Ability to provide meaningful, quality, and enriching programs for a wide spectrum of  community youth 

  • Ability to perform a variety of planning, administrative, supervisory, and community relations work requiring independent judgment and excellent organizational skills 

  • Ability to foster and promote a positive teamwork environment 

  • Ability to communicate effectively in a public speaking setting and communicate in  writing 

  • Ability to communicate effectively with youth, young adults and families 

  • Ability to work in a loud, noisy, active environment 

  • Ability to work in person, in the community 

  • Ability to carry out Recreation Center expectations

Desired Qualifications

  • Three (3) years' experience planning and implementing prevention and intervention programs
  • Three (3) years' experience working in recreation or youth services 
  • Previous experience working with community agencies to develop partnerships
  • Previous experience writing mini-grants for program funding
  • Previous experience using recreation registration software, like Rec Trac
  • Demonstrated commitment to furthering racial equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Experience working or living in Brooklyn Park
  • Previous experience working with people from various cultural, socioeconomic, racial and ethnic backgrounds
  • Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Laotian, Russian, Somali or Vietnamese language(s)

Anticipated Work Schedule:  Full-time, non-exempt, non-union, benefited position subject to a flexible schedule that includes a standard eight (8)-hour day; will include evening and weekend hours.  

Anticipated Hiring Wage:  $25.95 - $33.34 Hourly, depending on qualifications
