Where the squares aren't

Art on Main Gallery
One Main Street

Artist: Elena Thomas
Exhibition Dates:
through April 4, 2022

This site-specific installation, Where the Squares Aren’t, is made up of interlocking wood squares combined with black reflective acrylic and two-way mirrored acrylic. Specific lighting choices are also used to create shadows and reflections. As the piece goes from day to night the shadows and reflections change, offering a changing visual experience. By using reflective material, repetitive shape, and lighting, the work is meant to draw people in and challenge their visual perception. The acrylic sheets also show the reflections of people walking by, adding another layer of public engagement into the work.

DOWNTOWN SCULPTURE GALLERY

ellsworth_athena_2022

Artist: Jenny Ellsworth
Title: ATHENA
Medium: Salvaged semi truck transmission gears
Location: Main Street between B Street and Auburn Avenue

Athena will be installed in downtown Auburn in mid-February. This is the final sculpture to be installed in the Auburn 2021-2022 Downtown Sculpture Gallery.

Ellsworth's inspiration for Athena came when she found a tiny blue egg high up on a mountain in New Zealand. Robins symbolize passion, renewal and growth while eggs are a symbol of life. Artist Jenny Ellsworth creates private and public sculptures using mostly found materials. Through this process of repurposing, she finds a rewarding challenge in the creation of art from found objects. These pieces inspire her by their past purpose and shape, and she tries to keep their original look intact to tell the story of its first life.

The Downtown Sculpture Gallery showcases ten outdoor sculptures of various sizes, types, and mediums. The sculpture gallery changes annually providing different artwork for Auburn residents to experience and enjoy. The annual People's Choice Award contest is underway. Make sure to join the fun and vote for your favorite artwork. The artist whose sculpture receives the most votes will win a $500 award.
