Forecast Discussion Extended Forecast
Monday, March 31: Moderate afternoon mixing heights will promote ventilation. However, surface high pressure north of Kansas will produce light to moderate north-northeasterly winds during the afternoon hours, transporting smoke from potential fires in northern Butler and southwestern Chase Counties into Wichita. By the late afternoon and through the evening hours, winds will shift to easterly to southeasterly, carrying additional smoke into Wichita from potential fires in the south-central and southwestern Flint Hills. Furthermore, a temperature inversion will develop after 9 p.m., trapping potential smoke near the surface.

Tuesday, April 1: Warm air aloft will generate low mixing heights during the afternoon, limiting ventilation. Additionally, as a cold front approaches Kansas, moderate and gusty south-southeasterly winds will transport smoke from potential fires in the far northeastern Flint Hills into Topeka and Lincoln, Nebraska through the afternoon and early evening. Furthermore, smoke from potential fires in the far southwestern Flint Hills will impact Wichita.
This forecast is for air quality impacts only.
