Indigenous People's Day proclamation 2022

Indigenous Peoples' Day proclaimed in King County

King County Executive Dow Constantine and the Metropolitan King County Council proclaim October 10, 2022, as Indigenous Peoples' Day in King County and encourage all residents to learn about and embrace the historical truths and cultures of American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Indigenous Peoples and to respect their many contributions. To celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, consider these Indigenous organizations during our Annual Giving Drive 

King County’s Annual Giving Drive (AGD) is underway through Nov. 18. To celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, consider supporting causes and nonprofits that serve Indigenous people and are Indigenous led. 

Indigenous organizations know best what they need to prosper and thrive, and have the knowledge, ability, and right to determine the solutions that serve their communities best. 

Use this list to learn more about Indigenous organizations serving Indigenous youth, education, cultural assets, health, the environment and more, and how these organizations are contributing to building the strength of local and regional American Indian, Alaska Native, and Indigenous communities.

King County’s vaccine requirements continue

King County’s vaccine mandate will continue for executive branch employees and is unaffected by Governor Inslee’s ending of all remaining COVID-19 emergency orders.

Consistent with current policy and practice, all executive branch employees are required to be fully vaccinated, unless they are otherwise accommodated. Read more.

Ben Malmstadt, Metro’s 2022 Facilities Employee of the Year

Ben Malmstadt’s devotion to ensuring clean, safe spaces for riders and the communities has earned him top honors as Metro’s Facilities Employee of the Year for 2022.

Malmstadt was honored at a ceremony at Metro’s Atlantic base attended by his family and teammates as well as King County Executive Dow Constantine and Metro Deputy General Manager Michelle Allison. Read more.

Commute Trip Reduction Survey begins Oct. 17

On October 17, the Commute Trip Reduction survey will be distributed to all County worksites with over 100 employees. The Washington State Commute Trip Reduction law requires these surveys of employers every two years.

When you complete the confidential survey, you will have a chance to win prizes provided by the King County Employee Transportation Program and Commute Seattle. 

The survey results assist the state and county to design and implement transportation programs that address the diverse needs of employees, while also working to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and decrease energy consumption.

KC Inform video

 

During an emergency having timely information on what is happening is critical. King County employees can sign-up for KCInform, the employee alert and warning system, to receive information about infrastructure disruptions, facility impacts, changes in your department’s business operations, and other critical impacts.

Your King County desk phone and @kingcounty.gov email are already in the system. It is important to register your County-issued cell phone (if applicable) and personal cell phone and email address to ensure you receive time-sensitive messages. This service is free and your personal contact information is secure and protected. On Thursday, Oct. 20 at 9 a.m. we will test KCInform as part of the annual Great Washington ShakeOut drill to test earthquake preparedness.

King County Affinity Group celebrates National LGBTQ+ History Month by highlighting activist Heather Purser

This week, for National LGBTQ+ History Month, the LGBTQ+ Affinity Group celebrates Heather Purser. Purser is a Suquamish activist that successfully advocated for her tribe to legally recognize same-sex marriages in 2011, before they were recognized in Washington. Learn more about Purser and other LGBTQ+ individuals throughout history by visiting this calendar celebrating LGBTQ+ History.

Employee Giving Program Nonprofit Expo Series

The 2022 Employee Giving Program is underway and the virtual Nonprofit Expo Series is every Wednesday through Nov.16. 

The next session will be for organizations focused on current natural disaster relief including efforts for Hurricane Ian and Pakistan flood with representatives from the American Red Cross, Save the Children, and Islamic Relief USA. Read more.

Upcoming flu shot clinics

The county makes it free for employees and anyone covered by your benefits to get a flu shot at one of our onsite clinics, or at your doctor’s office or local pharmacy. The Balanced You team is again organizing free onsite flu shot clinics for those workers onsite. Appointments ahead of time are highly encouraged. Read about free onsite flu shot clinics and schedule your appointment here.  

Upcoming flu shot clinics:

  • Renton Roads: Monday, Oct. 17 from 6:30 to 10 a.m.
  • Ryerson Bus Base: Monday, Oct. 17 from 2:30 to 5 p.m.
  • Cadman Roads: Thursday, Oct. 20 from 7 to 8 a.m.

Benefits-covered employees who are telecommuting and their insurance-covered family members may find it more convenient to go to their healthcare provider’s office or a local pharmacy for their free flu shot. Learn more about how to get a flu shot through your provider or local pharmacy.

Balanced You Self-care webinar: Financial Planning Tips for the Holidays

Professional Development Scholarship Information Sessions

The Department of Human Resources' Career Support Services is hosting information sessions for the Coalition Labor Agreement’s Professional Development Scholarship throughout October to help create a strong application.

These sessions will go over how applications will be graded, how to create an Individual Development Plan, and other best practices. There will be an open Q&A at the end to answer any questions about this career boosting opportunity. Multiple dates and times are available.  


Training Spotlight:

STAR-LA Interview Practice and Feedback – Online – Join instructor Lili Stansberry for this 90-minute small group workshop designed to provide mock interview practice and feedback using the STAR-LA method as taught by King County Career Support Services. This workshop is for participants who have attended the Career Support Services led Strategic Interviewing Tips and Techniques online workshop or have watched the 10-minute STAR-LA method video found on the Career Support Services website at www.kingcounty.gov/CSS.

Understanding Trauma – Online – The course will look at the interventions, therapies, and support that are most likely to help persons impacted by trauma, and also the potential limitations and risks with those efforts. Issues addressed includ symptom management versus healing, the role of diagnosis, and advanced topics of cultural and intergenerational trauma. This six-session class fee is $175.
