Recently, DC Public Library was honored to host Chief Jesse James Swann Jr. of the Piscataway Conoy Tribe and DC Archaeologists Ruth Trocolli and Christine Ames from the DC Office of Planning-Historic Preservation Office, as well as local historian Armand Lione for a conversation on native artifacts recovered in the District and their importance to the local indigenous tribes.
During the conversation, which was recorded as a podcast, they examined artifacts that have been stored at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in the People’s Archive and discussed what these items mean to the Piscataway Tribe, the importance of their recovery and collection, and how the Piscataway Tribe keeps traditions, history, and advocacy alive through storytelling. A fitting end to our celebration of Native American Heritage Month, we encourage you to listen and continue utilizing the resources at DC Public Library to uncover more of the indigenous histories of this area. And a massive thank you to each of the podcast guests for sharing their time and expertise with the Library. Happy listening!
