This Is National Library Week!

SCPL

Let's Celebrate Libraries  😊

This is the premier week for library trustees, staff, patrons, and advocates to celebrate our nation’s libraries.  This is National Library Week April 23-29. Sponsored since 1958 by the American Library Association, the theme for this year’s celebrations of libraries is “There’s More to the Story.”

Here’s more about the 2023 theme from ALA’s website: “Libraries are full of stories in a variety of formats, from picture books to large print, audiobooks to ebooks, and more. But there's so much more to the story.  Libraries of Things lend items like museum passes, games, musical instruments, and tools.  Library programming brings communities together for entertainment, education, and connection through book clubs, storytimes, movie nights, crafting classes, and lectures.  Library infrastructure provides Internet and technology access, literacy skills, and support for businesses, job seekers, and entrepreneurs. National Library Week 2023 will be a great time to tell your library’s multi-faceted story.”

Holding open houses, distributing bookmarks, offering give-aways and prizes are all great ways to acknowledge National Library Week.  The photo above shows one way that Sioux City PL is celebrating—with a local history display titled “We Heart Sioux City Public Library Today and Yesterday: Snapshots of the Library’s Past.”

More ideas from ALA with these days designated for special recognition this week

  • Tuesday April 25: National Library Workers Day, a day for library staff, users, administrators, and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers.
  • Wednesday April 26: National Library Outreach Day (formerly National Bookmobile Day) a day to celebrate library outreach and the dedicated library professionals who are meeting their patrons where they are

Next Big Library Read ...

Tastes Like War

Tastes Like War: May 3-17

The next Big Library Read kicks off next week on May 3rd with the book Tastes Like War by Grace M. Cho.  Part food memoir, part sociological investigation. Tastes Like War is about a daughter's search, through intimate and global history, for the roots of her mother's schizophrenia. This book is the winner of the 2022 Asian / Pacific American Award in Literature and the finalist for the 2021 National Book Award for Nonfiction

Point your patrons to Bridges on May 3rd to download the book and to the Big Library Read website for the discussion guide and discussion forum.  Tastes Like War will be available for simultaneous use in eBook and audiobook formats between May 3-17.

About The Book

From GoodReads: “Grace M. Cho grew up as the daughter of a white American merchant marine and the Korean bar hostess he met abroad. They were one of few immigrants in a xenophobic small town during the Cold War, where identity was politicized by everyday details—language, cultural references, memories, and food. When Grace was fifteen, her dynamic mother experienced the onset of schizophrenia, a condition that would continue and evolve for the rest of her life.

In her mother’s final years, Grace learned to cook dishes from her parent’s childhood in order to invite the past into the present, and to hold space for her mother’s multiple voices at the table. And through careful listening over these shared meals, Grace discovered not only the things that broke the brilliant, complicated woman who raised her—but also the things that kept her alive.”

Find Grant Money for Your Library and Community: Using Foundation Directory.  April 25.  2:00-3:00PM.  REPEATS April 27 10:00-11:00AM

So often we hear about the benefits of grant funding, but it can be challenging to find the right funder for a specific project. Did you know you have access to a resource in your library to connect you AND others in your community to potential funders? Thanks to the State Library’s subscription, you and other grant seekers can access the Foundation Directory (FD) from Candid.

In this webinar presented by Douglas Moore of FD, you’ll learn how to search the interface for grants for your library and how to teach your patrons as well. The first half of this webinar will be a demonstration of how to search and use the information in FD, the second half will be open for your questions.

Note that a library’s IP address must be registered with FD and you must be in your library to access. To confirm your IP is registered and you are able to access FD from your library, contact toni.blair@iowa.gov
