COVID-19 vaccine mandate lifted for Executive Branch employees

As of Feb. 6, King County no longer requires proof of vaccination against COVID-19 as a condition of Executive Branch employment.

Thanks to the success of the vaccine, vaccine mandate, and other precautions King County employees and residents have taken, COVID-19 cases are trending downward, and the risk of serious infection is falling. Read more. 


Performance Excellence Awards

Nominations open for Executive’s Performance Excellence Awards 

The Executive’s Performance Excellence Awards recognize individual employees and workgroups whose innovations and improvements are delivering excellence for our customers, our organization, and our region. 

This year, the awards will honor Executive Branch employees and teams for their exceptional contributions in leadership, innovation, and Lean maturity in the past 12 months. There are three award categories:

  • Innovation Awards: People, Cost, Service, Equity and Social Justice, Climate and Environmental Stewardship
  • Leadership Excellence Awards: People Leader, Individual Contributor, Fred Jarrett Award
  • Road to Excellence Awards: Divisions that achieve Stabilization Level or higher on all categories of the Lean Maturity Model

The nomination period is open through Feb. 20, 2023, and anyone can nominate employees or teams for the Innovation and Leadership Awards. Review the nomination criteria here.

On the beat in Burien with Detective Mark Hayden

Mark Hayden and Jesse Anderson

Detective Mark Hayden has been serving the Burien Police Department and its community for almost 20 years, most recently as the full-time resource officer for downtown Burien.

Recently, Undersheriff Jesse Anderson joined Detective Hayden for a stroll through the Burien Farmers Market, where they interacted with community members and business owners. They all expressed their gratitude for the difference Det. Hayden made with his presence on foot patrol. Watch the video above or click here.

KCIA preparing for Baseball All-Star Game

Planning has begun to accommodate the needs of the 2023 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, to be hosted by the Seattle Mariners on July 11 at T-Mobile Park.

King County International Airport (KCIA) leaders and staff, along with representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration, Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting, and fixed base operators, met in mid-January to begin a regular series of planning meetings to ensure everything goes smoothly. February is Heart Health Month

In observance of Heart Health Month, King County and Omada Diabetes Prevention program want to provide you with tips for taking small steps to improving your heart health. There’s no question about it–regular activity really pays off, from lowering your blood sugar and cholesterol to reducing your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Black History Month film series: In the Heat of the Night

In celebration of Black History Month, the Department of Executive Services is presenting a three-part film education series from the golden era of Black cinema. 

The first film in the series is In the Heat of the Night, starring Sidney Poitier, from 1967. This neo-film noir is considered one of Hollywood's greatest classics. In 2002, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for its cultural significance.

The presentation will include commentary from Marlon Brown, activist, community strategist, and co-owner of Racial Equity Consultants. 

  • Friday, Feb. 10 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. via Zoom. Passcode required.

Mindful Gratitude: Learn how mindfulness can help you become a more compassionate and grateful person.

Mindful Relationships 1: How do you relate? Get to the root of harmful relationship patterns such as blame, defensiveness, avoiding conflict, and shutting down in this workshop on bringing mindfulness to how you relate to others.

Mindful Movement

An hour of gentle, guided movement appropriate for all bodies. This workshop is an experiential deep dive into the practice of moving mindfully and learning to relate to our bodies with awareness, intentionality, and gentleness–through practices such as walking meditation and mindful movement with gentle yoga postures. Comfortable clothing may be helpful as participants are typically offered standing, sitting, and on-the-floor practices. All bodies and abilities are welcome and modifications will be offered.

Disability Equity Network meeting Feb. 14

King County Disability Equity Network (KCDEN, formerly the King County Disability Affinity Group) meetings are open to King County employees. The purpose is to center and support those employees who self-identify as a person with a disability. Employees will not be asked to disclose any information regarding one’s disability.  

The next meeting topic will be how the KCDEN can support the advancement of disability equity efforts across the County, including strengthening collaboration within and between King County departments.

If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in the meeting, please email disabilityequity@kingcounty.gov. Future meetings are scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m.

Administrative Professional Partners kicks off 2023 with project management presentation

The Administrative Professional Partners (APP) is preparing new and dynamic training and development through the series "APP Presents." With subject matter experts facilitating each session, administrative professionals will be fortified with the information and knowledge for a successful career path.

The next event topic is Project Management, with presentations by project managers from Metro Transit and the Office of Performance, Strategy, and Budget.

Training Spotlight:

Facilitating Effective Meetings – Online – Learn the skills used by a facilitator to design and run an effective meeting. How to be a better participant is also discussed. Topics include specific facilitation skills, group decision making skills, and how to deal with disruptive behaviors. Also learn how to navigate difficult behaviors and keep meetings on track. There is an $85 fee.
