King County turns to new contracting method to fix critical wastewater pipes
Traditionally, large public projects are designed under one contract, and built under another. By the time construction crews start the work, design meets reality – often in the form of costly unexpected change orders to the project and delays.
The Wastewater Treatment Division has project needs so critical it can’t afford such uncertainties. So, King County submitted the case for an alternative method of project delivery called “progressive design build.” This contracting method brings designers and builders to the same table at the early stages of project development. Utility Workers in the Facilities Management Division (FMD) are like the county’s “utility players” on a baseball team, capable of serving in various roles or positions as needed. Their jobs aren’t related to a public utility such as power or water as you might first assume. They take care of anything not assigned to a specific trade worker, like a carpenter, electrician, or painter.
This is the team that continues to move agencies out of the Administration building and supports moves around the county. They also handle everything from landscaping to severe weather cleanup to burst pipes.
“Essentially, the biggest challenge for this group is the unforeseen,” explained Sumeet Adams, Facilities Maintenance Manager for FMD. “This team really steps up and gets the job done.” Read more.
Free rapid COVID-19 self-tests are still available
If you feel sick or have COVID-19 symptoms, it’s important to get tested right away, even if you're vaccinated. If you test positive, most treatments for COVID-19 must start within five days of feeling sick. Now is a good time to stock up on free at-home rapid tests, while supplies are still available and covered by insurance. Where to request tests:

- Washington State Department of Health: www.sayyescovidhometest.org. Enter your home zip code to see if supplies are still available in your area. The program ends on May 11, 2023.
- Insurance providers are required to cover the cost of eight at-home tests per covered member per month, through May 11, 2023:

Are you looking to prepare for your next job interview? Career Support Services has recently migrated its virtual Strategic Interviewing Skills training to a one-hour eLearning course on NEOGOV Learn. So, it is now available to you 24/7 to be taken at your leisure.

Several major updates have been made to the training content to prepare you for questions you may face from a King County interview panel. Even if you have taken this training before, there are a handful of new strategies, tips and techniques that will enhance your interviewing skills.

Mental Health First Aid@Work
Mental health is an important part of overall health and well-being that can often be misunderstood or overlooked. To increase awareness about mental health and highlight supportive resources, Balanced You has partnered with the National Council of Behavioral Health to offer Mental Health First Aid@Work (MHFA@Work) trainings.
These trainings are available to all County employees, free of charge. MHFA@Work is an interactive, skills-based training program that teaches you and your team how to identify, understand and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges. You’ll build skills and confidence you need to reach out and provide initial support to a colleague who’s struggling. You’ll also learn how to help connect them to appropriate employee resources or reach out for emergency services when necessary.

Communication and Problem Solving Skills – Online ONE DAY – Instructor Lenny Borer will address communication and problem-solving skills with the public and with co-workers. This class covers skills for effective listening, speaking, dealing with conflicts, and with defensive behavior.
Introduction to Project Management – Online – Join instructor Michael Snell for this 10-week course that introduces the practices that are fundamental to successful project management in a broad range of industry environments. Students are introduced to the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in this fast-growing professional field, including project planning, scheduling, and managing cost, quality, and risk, while monitoring the influences that can affect project scope and eventual project success.
Introduction to Functions of Management – Online – Join instructor Dale Wilen for this 10-week course that serves as an introduction to planning, organizing, coordinating, staffing, directing, budgeting, controlling, and evaluating functions of management; leadership roles and styles, and development of individual and group effectiveness; managing conflict and change; and the human aspects of management.

The Education Specialist performs Childhood Vaccine Program (CVP) site visits with enrolled clinics in King County utilizing pre-designed assessment methodologies designed by Washington State Dept. of Health (DOH) and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The incumbent evaluates clinic data to determine whether current CVP program policies and procedures regarding vaccine ordering, reporting, inventory management, and vaccine dose documentation are effectively carried out by the practice. This position evaluates provider compliance with federal and state requirements in a supportive, educational and precise manner, bringing the contract terms to bear in problem situations where provider access to state-supplied vaccines may be at risk. The Education Specialist also engages in immunization quality improvement with providers (IQIP), designed to increase on-time vaccination of children and adolescents.
