Volunteers Make Our Island Fantastic!
National Volunteer week is April 16 - 22, and on Thursday, April 13, Mastick volunteers will be acknowledged for their contributions at the 2023 Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. Today and throughout the year, be sure to reach out and say "Mahalo!" to our volunteers for their service. We appreciate each volunteer for being an essential part of our Mastick community!

Have you considered writing about your life, as a legacy for your family, or just for fun? Whether you want to write memoir, fictional autobiography, or creative nonfiction, tell the stories only you can tell! Through writing exercises, discussion of readings, and constructive group workshops on our drafts, we will learn how to captivate our readers. Fitness with Kendra Tuesdays, April 4 -25, 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Location: Room A Cost: $39 ~ Class #21469

Join Katherine "Kat" Kaldis, Paratransit Coordinator, to learn about the various transportation options (East Bay Paratransit, AC Transit Clipper card, Free AC Transit Bus Passes, the AIM Program, and MORE!) available to Alameda residents, then learn how to use Transit Apps to plan your trips on various modes of public transportation. The Senior Connections Case Manager will facilitate, provide resources, referrals, and practical information to assist with working through life’s complex issues. Boomer Dance Party! Friday, April 21, 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Location: Social Hall $3 donation at the door
The theme for April’s dance party is “Disco Inferno!” The playlist will include the explosion of music and dance styles between 1969 and 1979. Whether you prefer line dancing to “The Hustle,” doing a wicked Boogaloo to an Earth, Wind, & Fire tune, smooth dancing to “How Deep is Your Love” by the Bee Gees, or just doing your own thing to KC & The Sunshine Band…we’ve got you covered! Oh yes…there will be a mirrored ball.
Costumes are encouraged, and we will have prizes for the best wearing of platform shoes, jumpsuits, swirly skirts, bell bottoms, leisure suits, etc. We will have a disco-era trivia contest as well as our signature boomer dance party dance competition, with trophies for all finishers. Commemorative photo backdrop, with snacks and refreshments included. Only the most danceable tunes…so grab a friend, slip into those dancing shoes, and get your boogie on!

Transportation to the Alameda County Fair! Friday, June 30, 2023, 11:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Cost: $5 Class #21741
Registration for this trip begins on: Friday, March 31 at 9:00 a.m.
Activity Level: Move at your own pace
Description: Thanks to a grant provided by the Alameda County Fair, Mastick Members age 62 and older may attend the fair at a reduced rate. Registration includes transportation on a climate controlled bus and admission to the fair. Members will be "on their own" at the fair and must return to the bus at the appointed time in order to receive a ride back to Mastick. To register, click here.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program
All appointments have been filled for the 2022 Tax Program. We are keeping a waiting list in case we have cancellations. If you'd like to be added to the waiting list, please call 510-747-7501 and leave your name and phone number. WE WILL ONLY CALL YOU IF WE HAVE A CANCELLATION AND THERE IS AN AVAILABLE APPOINTMENT THAT WE CAN OFFER TO YOU.
- The process is a same day "DROP OFF" model. At your appointment time, a Tax-Aide volunteer will meet you at the tax room doorway and review your completed intake forms (sent with the appointment letter) and inventory your tax documents. Please wait in your vehicle or at the Center, for approximately one hour, until a Tax-Aide volunteer contacts you to review and sign your tax forms and retrieve all documents.
Please note that the Tax Program is unable to complete returns for the following situations:
- Partial year health insurance - must have full year coverage
- Schedule K with anything other than Interest, Dividends, and Royalties
- Not a full time California resident
- Sales of house with gain of over $250,000 if single, $500,000 if married
- Married Filing Separately - unless both taxpayers did not live together for the full year
- Rental property including Airbnb
Mastick Thrift Shop
The Mastick Thrift Shop is open to the public Tuesdays and Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Donations are accepted on Thursdays and Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. or until FULL. Please bring donations on Thursdays and Saturdays ONLY.
Mastick Program Guidelines
We are excited to see you and want to ensure your visit to the Center is a success. In an effort to maintain the safety and well-being of members and staff, please adhere to the following when visiting:
- Face-coverings and physical distancing remain in place and are strongly recommended when inside the building;
- Stay home if showing signs of respiratory illness (cough, sore throat or shortness of breath);
- Wall-mounted hand-sanitizing stations are available in each room;
- Be sure to dress in layers, bring a hat, sunscreen, and anything necessary to provide for your own comfort.
