It's a wrap on Summer Reading 2023! Lots of fun events were held this summer, and I enjoyed seeing so many special events! Congratulations everyone on hosting a wonderful Summer Reading Program! 

2023 Summer Survey Coming Soon

The State Library will be sending out a survey for you to tell us about your Summer 2023 programming. The survey invitation will go to all Public Library Directors with instructions that they should work with the appropriate point person/people for all things Summer!

We greatly appreciate your prompt responses once the survey is sent out, which will help us identify ways to improve the program for you!

Lunch with the State Library is a series of short sessions designed to give library staff a high-level overview of a featured service available to them through the State Library of Iowa so they can use it in their library to serve their patrons.

POP YS Live is back! Our monthly webinar series focuses on trends and best practices in services and programming for those working in Youth Services librarianship around the state. All webinars will be recorded. 

Baby Bounce Basics - Wednesday, August 9, 1:00-2:00 PM 

Baby Bounce Basics will teach the nuts and bolts of library programming for babies. What is a baby bounce? Which books are the right books for a baby storytime? Why are we  doing programming for people who don’t know the ABCs? This program will cover the basics for those who are new to baby programming, but will help reenergize veterans.

New Weeding Webinar Series!

Collection Cultivation is a four-part series designed to give public librarians an overview of maintaining their library collections through weeding. We’ll cover some basics, dig deeper into cleaning your adult and YS collections, and hear best practices from library practitioners. Attend one or all of the sessions!

All sessions run from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. 

  • Part 1 (August 1): Weeding Basics (recording coming soon!)
  • Part 2 (August 15): Data-Driven Weeding
  • Part 3 (August 22): Weeding the Youth Collection
  • Part 4 (August 29): Wedded to Weeding (Practitioner Panel)

In the third session on Aug. 22, Janeé will share best practices for weeding specific to library collections for youth. She’ll apply resources to kid and teen collections and cover some specific considerations to bear in mind when evaluating these shelves. All sessions will be recorded.

POP YS Con is back! We hope you'll join us April 8-9, 2024 in Ames at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center. Watch for registration to open in early 2024.

Previously known as Kids First, Pop YS (Youth Services) Con is a conference is for all library staff working with youth from babies through teenagers.

ALA's Thinking Money For Kids

ALA's Thinking Money for Kids


American Library Association and FINRA Investor Education Foundation invites public libraries to apply to receive a Thinking Money for Kids Program Kit, a collection of expertly vetted resources to help libraries offer financial education and literacy for children ages 5-12, both in the library and in children's homes. 

Approximately 200 public libraries will be selected to receive a Thinking Money for Kids Program Kit (estimated value of $2,000). Each kit includes materials to host in-person children's programs, a set of Playaway Launchpad tablets, promotional items, and more. 

Applications are open through September 8.

Festival Fridays: Latinx Kidlit Book Festival

Latinx Kidlit Book Festival Logo


Mark your calendars for the Latinx Kidlit Book Festival! This is a free virtual celebration of Latinx kidlit books, authors, illustrators, and books for all students and educators. 

Created by Las Musas Books, this virtual festival offers a combination of educational materials and virtual literary content in the form of panels with best-selling and award-winning Latinx authors and illustrators of picture books, middle grade, young adult, graphic novels, comic books, and poetry.

This year's festival will host Festival Fridays during Hispanic Heritage Month. These sessions will feature interactive storytimes, author panels, discussions, and more.

Festival Fridays will be September 22, September 29, October 6, and October 13.
