The Dare County Library is excited to share a new resource with our community and patrons: NorthStar Digital Literacy.
Northstar Digital Literacy defines basic skills needed to perform tasks on computers and online. Online, self-guided modules assess the ability of individuals to perform tasks based on these skills. Included are basic computer digital literacy standards and modules in three main areas:
-
Essential Computer Skills - Basic Computer Skills, Internet Basics, Using Email, Windows OS and Mac OS
-
Essential Software Skills – Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Docs
-
Using Technology in Daily Life - Social Media, Information Literacy, Career Search Skills, Accessing Telehealth Appointments, Supporting K-12 Distance Learning and Your Digital Footprint
Northstar was developed in response to the needs of job seekers who may lack the digital literacy skills needed to seek, obtain and retain employment, as well as to perform other tasks in daily life. Northstar allows end users to freely take the assessments from anywhere via the Dare County Library eResources page.

Our Book Club in a Bag program has 26 titles available for checkout. Please contact Sophie Bennewitz at the Manteo Library to check the availability of our 12-copy sets of book club titles and to reserve yours today.
December Featured Title: "The Night Watchman"
Thomas Wazhashk is the night watchman at the jewel bearing plant, the first factory located near the Turtle Mountain Reservation in rural North Dakota. He is also a Chippewa council member who is trying to understand the consequences of a new “emancipation” bill on its way to the floor of the United States Congress.
It is 1953, and he and the other council members know the bill isn’t about freedom. The bill is a “termination” that threatens the rights of Native Americans to their land as well as their very identity.
Since graduating high school, Pixie Paranteau has insisted that everyone call her Patrice. Unlike most of the girls on the reservation, Patrice, the class valedictorian, has no desire to wear herself down with a husband and kids. She makes jewel bearings at the plant, a job that barely pays her enough to support her mother and brother.

![Staff Picks](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/NCDARECOUNTY/2023/08/8101510/copy-of-library-narrow-page-banners-1_original.png) "Alfie & Me" by Carl Safina
Perfect for backyard wildlife watchers and part-time philosophers, "Alfie & Me" is, at its heart, the story of an orphaned owlet who is rescued and rehabilitated by renowned ecologist Carl Safina and his wife Patricia. However, when Alfie is finally able to fly free, she decides to stay close and let them in on her “wild” owl life. As Safina writes from his backyard about their day-to-day (or, more accurately, night-to-night) Alfie observations, he weaves in science, literature, world religions, ancient and modern philosophy, and humor. This book offers so many memorable moments and provoking insights. It has really stayed with me, and there are adorable owl photos.

![Heading reads: Thank You From Dare County Library](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/NCDARECOUNTY/2023/11/8571338/library-narrow-page-banners-1_original.png) As we wrap up another amazing year at the Dare County Library, we want to thank each and every patron who walked through our doors or called on us for help. Thank you for allowing us to be there!
We had many stories of laughter, grace, support, learning, sharing experiences, finding common ground and participating in Dare County's outreach events within the community.
A public library is an institution dedicated to helping its community, and we intend to continue our wholehearted commitment to each and every one of you in 2024.
Happy New Year!
