Local meteorologist Steve Pool began his career as an intern at KOMO News. Hired full-time by the station in 1978, he spent 42 years in broadcasting - retiring in 2019. Last month, Pool lost his battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was 70 years old.
Pool felt his chances at law school were slim. Working as a general assignment reporter on the morning news, he noticed the similarities between preparing news stories and preparing court cases. He earned a degree from the University of Washington in atmospheric studies and became KOMO 4’s chief weather forecaster in 1984.
Pool hosted KOMO-TV's Front Runners which aired every Saturday and in the 1990s, a children's direct-to-video series called Little Steps.
He received eight Emmy Awards during his career and made more than 70 appearances on Good Morning America. Additionally, he was the author of Somewhere, I Was Right - a book about weather and its forecasting.
In 2004, he was inducted into the UW Department of Communications Hall of Fame.
Among many other philanthropic contributions, Pool and his wife established a half-million dollar endowment at Seattle Children’s Hospital to support low-income families.
