“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered for his tireless work during the Civil Rights Movement and his dream that one day everyone would be treated as equals.
Other than President George Washington, he is the only American whose birthday is a national holiday.
King led the civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. His leadership was fundamental to ending legal segregation in the United States and has influenced the pursuit of equality around the world.

The Washington State Department of Commerce recently unveiled the Community Reinvestment Plan - a groundbreaking roadmap for investing $200 million into communities that have borne the disproportionate impact of the historical design and enforcement of drug-related laws and penalties - the "war on drugs." Community voices are needed to be an essential part of shaping the process for this investment.
The Community Advisory Board and Local Advisory Teams will play pivotal roles in the Community Reinvestment Plan implementation. As part of an unwavering commitment to inclusivity and to this project, Commerce needs your help. We kindly request a few minutes of your valuable time to complete a survey to gather input from community members like you to guide the formation and work of the advisory board and local teams.
The survey is open until Monday, January 15, 2024.
Questions about the plan or the survey, are welcomed. Please contact at crp@commerce.wa.gov.
