Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medical system based on writings that rely on a “natural” and holistic approach to physical and mental health. Ayurvedic medicine is one of the world’s oldest medical systems and remains one of India’s traditional health care systems. Ayurvedic treatment combines products (mainly derived from plants, but also including animal, metal, and mineral products), diet, exercise, and lifestyle.

A few studies suggest that Ayurvedic treatments may help manage symptoms of osteoarthritis and type 2 diabetes, but most of these studies were small or not well designed. There has also been research on potential benefits of some individual herbs used in Ayurvedic medicine, such as ashwagandha.

Some Ayurvedic preparations may contain lead, mercury, or arsenic in amounts that can be harmful. Elevated blood levels of these elements have been found in some people who use Ayurvedic products.
