P2 Automotive Maintenance & Repair Training

Pollution Prevention (P2) Program

Automotive Maintenance & Repair Training

Posted On: Dec. 4, 2023 - 9:00 a.m.

ADEQ’s Pollution Prevention (P2) Planning Program assists certain businesses in reducing the use of toxic substances, minimizing the generation of hazardous waste, and preventing the release of pollutants into the environment. We have a shared common goal to reduce waste and keep your communities safe!

As a part of this goal, ADEQ created this training to inform automotive maintenance and repair facilities of the environmental and public health effects that can impact their local communities. Small changes in how these facilities manage waste and carry out day-to-day activities can reduce the amount of waste generated and potential staff exposure to harmful chemicals/materials. This training will enable staff and owners to make informed P2 decisions on materials and activities at their facility.

Self-Guided Training Course

ADEQ's training aims to benefit the automotive maintenance and repair industry as well as the environment by:

  • Introducing P2
  • Determining sources of waste,
  • Explaining why this waste may be harmful and
  • Identifying P2 opportunities that will reduce this waste at the source.

We all have a responsibility to keep our communities, environment and workplaces safe. Pollution prevention helps minimize or eliminate the release of pollutants into the environment and encompasses a range of actions to reduce the negative impact on ecosystems, air, water, soil and overall environmental quality.

Section Summary

In this section, we consider how automotive fluids and car wash cleaning agents can impact the environment. Commercial car washing can pose a threat to water resources due to issues with contamination from runoff, so it’s important to practice proper wastewater management. We will review Arizona's regulations and permits regarding wastewater management and explore activities that can help prevent car wash pollution. These activities include adopting safe chemical alternatives, implementing best management practices, and ensuring equipment safety handling to reduce environmental degradation.

Topics Covered:

  • Arizona Watersheds
  • Wastewater and Runoff
  • Wastewater and Sludge Management
  • Car Wash Types
  • P2 Opportunities
  • Test your knowledge by taking the quiz at the end.
