Walker Ranch Living History Demonstrator

Time Commitment & Minimum Age: Volunteer a minimum of three special events or field trip programs per year. Must be at least 9 years old.
Location:

Events take place at Walker Ranch Homestead, 7701 Flagstaff Mountain Road, approximately 7 miles west of Boulder.

Program Summary:

Share the history of Boulder County at events hosted by Parks & Open Space. Visitors love to talk to volunteers and learn about what life was like on a working ranch in the late 1800s.

Volunteers dress in period costume to demonstrate daily chores of a working western ranch for school programs and special events at the Walker Ranch Homestead.

Training and costumes are provided.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Some of the activities you could demonstrate are:

  • Cooking on a wood-burning stove.
  • Churning butter.
  • Making roof shingles.
  • Assisting the blacksmith.
  • Doing laundry the old-fashioned way.
  • Playing historical games.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 9 years old. If under the age of 18, must be accompanied by an adult parent/guardian during training and volunteer events.
  • Be comfortable speaking to a wide range of ages and audiences.
  • Have personal transportation.
  • Pass a criminal background check (18+).

Time Requirements for Volunteering

  • Must provide demonstrations at a minimum of three Heritage Days and/or School Days per year
Training Dates and Information:

After completion of the application, applicants will be contacted to take part in a new volunteer interview.

Trainings will then be scheduled for winter and/or spring depending on number of applicants.

Training generally consists of two 2-3 hour trainings, which can occur virtually or in person depending on group preference and scheduling.

Attending Walker Ranch Homestead events and interacting with other volunteers is highly recommended as part of the training process.
