Staying Active in a Crisis

Social distancing protocols might keep us from doing many of the activities we enjoy. However, there are ways to keep busy and entertained while also keeping yourself and everyone else safe. Here are what a couple of DEC's Office of Environmental Justice grant recipients are doing to keep their communities active during this crisis:

Gardening
Good news! You can still work on your garden!

We are dealing with a lot of uncertainty right now, but you can still get your gardens started. Plant some healthy fruits and veggies, or a rainbow of flowers and native plants. Make sure to check with your local supply shops for adjusted hours and protocols.

Volunteers Improving Neighborhood Environments (VINES) has some tips available on their website for your gardening needs.

Don’t have a yard? Here are some online tips for starting your planting indoors.

Take Action from Your Home
Being indoors doesn't mean you can't still actively participate in climate related issues and events. The Rochester Peoples Climate Coalition has launched a Climate Action from Your Sofa series to keep you busy. They are also offering environmental justice and climate law seminars. Visit their website for more information and to register.

The Sanctuary for Independent Media has virtual events, including a virtual Health Autonomy Clinic.

Stay safe!
