World Environment Day & World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day graphicJoin us in recognizing  World Oceans Day today, June 8th! Our natural environment is a place to take a step back, relax and re-center. Whether you’re at home or out getting some fresh air safely and responsibly, here are some tips to protect our environment, oceans, lakes and other waterways:

  • Recreate locally & Pack it in, pack it out. DEC and State Parks encourages New Yorkers to #RecreateLocal and practice physical distancing. Keep our environment clean by choosing reusables, such as a reusable water bottle. Make sure you pack out whatever you’ve packed in including trash, recycling and food scraps. Don’t add your garbage or recycling to overflowing trash or recycling bins in public spaces, this material only blows away as litter or attracts animals.

  • Masks and gloves belong in the garbage. With the increased use of disposable masks and gloves, they are quickly becoming a litter problem in our communities. After running errands, many people are simply tossing used masks and gloves on the ground or leaving them in shopping carts. These littered items can be swept into storm drains and waterways, forming microplastics and harming animals along the way. Please help protect our environment by properly disposing of these items in a trash container.

  • Put a lid on recyclables and trash. Help protect the world’s oceans and all the outdoor places we love by making sure recyclables and trash are contained in their bin. If you have a bin with a lid, take the extra step to make sure it’s closed to prevent recyclables or trash from blowing out and creating litter.

  • Take a moment to think about your favorite outdoor places and spaces and how you can get involved in preserving them.

  • Follow along on social media @WorldOceansDay and #ProtectOurHome to learn how you can protect our oceans and environment.
