The Opportunity
WSDOT has a great opportunity for a motivated Engineering professional who has strong leadership skills and an exceptional aptitude for managing projects. As the Design Lead Supervisor working out of our Northwest Region Headquarters in Shoreline, WA, this position will be responsible for delivering the assigned projects within scope, schedule, and budget while developing direct reports to become future leaders of WSDOT. The Design Lead Supervisor has a high impact to WSDOT’s mission to provide and support safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation options to improve livable communities and economic vitality for people and businesses. What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Design Lead Supervisor will:
  • Utilize available resources to manage the daily activities of assigned projects to ensure successful delivery of projects.
  • Manage scope, schedule, and budget of assigned projects.
  • Prepare and update project management plans and any other pertinent documentation needed for project delivery.
  • Coordinate projects with various in-house support groups and with external customers to identify, track, and manage risks.
  • Supervise and coach subordinate staff to maximize performance within their current roles and to prepare them for future roles.
  • Delegate and assign tasks to subordinate engineers or technicians, ensuring timely and accurate results by creating intermediate goals and providing feedback, ensuring deliverables meet current standards and guidelines.
  • Perform one on one meetings, assignment reviews, provide feedback, and recommend training opportunities for any subordinate staff.
  • Help deliver projects for the Fish Passage program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • Current Driver’s License
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience of increasing responsibilities in performing roadway design work.
  • Ability to supervise and coach subordinate staff to maximize performance in their current roles and to prepare them for future roles.
  • Ability to maintain respectful relationships with internal and external partners and stakeholders.
  • Ability to traverse different terrains during all weather conditions to perform field review.
  • Ability to travel to various project sites throughout the region and state.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Current Professional Engineer License

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
 
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
 
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
