DEC Updates 'DECinfo Locator' with Water-Related Data and New User-Friendly Enhancements

Online Tool Lets Users Track Active Layers and Data Updates and Improves Access to Recreational Information

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced that DECinfo Locator, the agency's interactive data application, now includes downloadable annual water withdrawal reports and functionality updates to improve user experience. Launched in July 2019, DECinfo Locator is the first interactive mapping tool to combine DEC's environmental quality and outdoor recreation data in one place. Since its debut, several new data layers have been added. The new Water Withdrawal Annual Reports layer brings the number of interactive layers to more than 65. DEC is launching the enhancements during Sunshine Week (March 15-21).

DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said, "DECInfo Locator provides New Yorkers with a wealth of information and data about DEC's work to protect public health and the environment statewide. The Info Locator is now loaded with even more information for users and will improve access to recreational opportunities, supporting our efforts to get outdoors and learn about how DEC is working to protect our shared natural resources."

With so much data available, DEC worked with the state Office of Information Technology Services to add an active-layers tool, letting users see - and print - a list of the layers they have added to a map. The Water Withdrawal Annual Reports layer gives the public easy access to more than 800 records from the 2018 reporting year to the present. Other updates include an enhanced boat launch layer and the ability to individually select DEC recreational assets, such as fire towers, lean-tos, and parking areas.

With more than 65 interactive data layers, DECinfo Locator lets users see and download permits, former industrial site cleanup plans, water quality reports, and more based on where they live, work, or play. Selecting a map feature can bring up links to database records for petroleum bulk storage facilities, oil wells, or permitted mines. Users can also view designated Environmental Justice areas and Climate Smart Communities or find out what local wastewater facilities are doing to reduce their impact on New York's waterbodies.

DECinfo Locator's outdoor activity data lets hikers, campers, hunters, and other adventurers plan forays into New York's natural wonders, whether that be locating a fire tower and planning a route, setting up a weekend of fishing, or just browsing the activities allowed on nearby state lands. Several information layers can be activated at the same time, allowing users to see the many ways DEC is working to protect and enhance the state's environment and recreational opportunities.
