WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) delivered recorded interviews and documents comprising the stories of service from 11 Iowa veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces to the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project. Last month, Grassley’s office interviewed veterans at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown to document their service to the nation. This is the second time Grassley has submitted interviews to the Library of Congress. A list of the records he has contributed to the project can be found here. Grassley also recently published an op-ed on his experience participating in the program.

“These stories will be preserved in the permanent collection of the Library, making accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. I want to thank all our veterans who have sacrificed in defense of our freedoms. Their service ensures that all Americans will live in peace and prosperity for generations to come,” Grassley said.

Established by Congress in 2000, the Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress collects, preserves and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. To date, more than 1,200 stories from Iowans have been recorded by the project. Iowa veterans who would like to have their story recorded can contact Grassley’s Veterans Fellow at veterans_fellow@grassley.senate.gov or call the senator’s Des Moines office at 515-288-1145.

Grassley’s leadership on behalf of veterans also includes his oversight work to hold the Department of Veterans Affairs accountable. Last year, Grassley and Sen. Joni Ernst raised questions about improperly canceled diagnostic exams at the Iowa City VA. The internal watchdog at the VA this week reported nearly one-fourth of the radiology orders it investigated at the facility were improperly canceled. Grassley will continue pressing the VA to ensure Iowa veterans receive timely medical services.
