Legislative Update
This week there was a poll released by the Center of the American Experiment that showed fifty-five percent of those surveyed do not approve of Gov. Walz’s response to last year’s riots and 81% of Minnesotans are personally concerned about the rising level of crime in Minnesota. The poll also found that the vast majority of people trust the police to act in the best interest of the public and to keep them safe.
I have heard from many people concerned about their safety as they travel to the Metro area for family visits and sporting events. Minnesotans know that law enforcement are the ones who face danger head-on to keep us safe, not politicians. It is long past time to drop the Democrats' push for policies that make it harder for officers to address crime. Anti-police sentiment already makes it difficult to recruit enough officers, and Democrat proposals would only worsen the problem. This is just one of the many areas that have yet to be worked out in the budget process this year.
In addition to public safety, House Republican priorities during special session include ending the emergency powers, which we voted for the 19th time to do on Monday, and keeping healthcare costs from skyrocketing by ending the DFL blockade of our first-in-the-nation program that has stabilized the health insurance market. If they continue to block the program, health care costs will skyrocket and health insurance choices will be drastically reduced.
