We are so excited to have a library back in Birkby!!!!!! Not only a library but a brand new shiny one! On our first day of opening, some lovely ladies from the community came and planted some spinach in the planters in our Community Garden. It's fantastic that local people are taking ownership of the new library and getting involved. Kirklees Together has up to date information about when we are open (see link in the next section), so pop over to say hi and let us know what you'd like to see happening in the future in YOUR library.

A Boy Called Hope by Laura Williamson
This book is an excellent reminder that true family aren't necessarily the people you share your name with...Dan Hope's life has all gone a bit weird...it started when his dad left...with the woman from the chippy...His mum has a new boyfriend who keeps secrets and even Dan's sister has started being mean. Dan decides to sort his life out once and for all and we get to join him on his journey from one amazing plan to the next...the problem is...his plans...they never go according to...well, to plan! You can borrow this as an e-book or as a paper book from one of our libraries.

Reading Well for Children
|
We are thrilled with the winners of the Carnegie Award (for an outstanding book written in English for Children and Young people): Jason Reynolds for Look Both Ways and the Kate Greenaway Medal (for outstanding illustration in a book for children): Sydney Smith for Small in the City.
Well done also to Manjeet Mann (Run, Rebel) and Sharon King-Chai (Starbird) for winning the Shadower's choice awards. Have a look at the Carnegie Greenaway website to find out more.
You can watch a Greenaway inspired #LAL session with Sharon King-Chai and Tiffany...one of our very own librarians and also a Carnegie/Greenaway judge by heading to our Library Adventures Live! pages.

The Mayor and Mayoress visited Denby Dale Library this month to collect a "Walk to Your Library" sheet (which you can collect at your library or download from our website) and have a look round the library before heading off with on a librarian led tour of Denby Dale...we found everything on the trail sheet except for ducks! I think they were just being shy!
We also passed the wonderful sheep in the picture...this was created as part of the Innovation in Textiles Woven festival in Kirklees.
There are fun events taking place this weekend, including a 2 day event at Ravensknowle Park called Growing Colour Together with family workshops and exciting things going on. Have a look at the Woven website to see what's going on.
