Glossop BookFest
A platform for creative writers and illustrators of all ages and abilities, professional or amateur
We provide opportunities for poets, playwrights, novelists, short story writers and illustrators in all media to engage with and offer their work to the public by oral presentation and/or for sale, thereby promoting literacy and education within the community and forging connections among individuals to the benefit of their well-being and mental health.
Join in workshops and activities, make connections and build networks
In addition to our annual BookFest Event, at which all local writers and illustrators have an opportunity to showcase their work, alongside workshops and interactive activities, we run monthly Open Mic sessions with guest speakers and contributions from local writers, and also Author Presentations, monthly sessions at which individual authors, playwrights and poets can present their work.

POETRY COMPETITION FOR YOUNG CREATIVES OF GLOSSOPDALE
Theme: Living History
Age range: Y6, Y7 & Y8 (10-13 years)
Submit by 30th April 2024
40 lines maximum.
1st, 2nd & 3rd prizes of book vouchers (£25, £20, £15)
Winning poems will be displayed in local shop windows for GLOSSOP HERITAGE WEEKEND, 31st May to 2nd June 2024 and shared on our website and social media platforms.

Ideas for poems might be linked to the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings (the focus of Glossop Heritage Weekend 2024), arise from topics of study or personal interpretations.

We welcome back Tony Curry, host and poet celebre at Manchester Word Central. Tony is returning to perform his work, ‘Tall Tales for All Men’. This is a series of short stories and poems. In the show Tony shares stories about growing up in Crawley, Sussex in the 1970’s.

NOVEL WRITING COURSE
On Monday evenings from 27th May to 8th July 2024, 7.30-9.30 pm in the small upstairs room in the Labour Club, Chapel Street, we will be offering a 12-hour novel-writing course for £60. The preliminary two-hour session on Monday 27th May will be FREE, and dedicated to a discussion of your writing needs and aspirations.
About the tutor
Mark Henderson
A former hospital doctor and medical researcher, Mark retired to Glossop in 2002 and now enjoys a second career as an editor, storyteller, author, and creative writing tutor.
A dozen of his books have been published. Folktales of the Peak District has been a bestseller, and his satirical novel National Cake Day in Ruritania was nominated for a literary award. Several of his current creative writing students have now published books of their own.
