A Lasting Gift for Valentines Day

Valentines Day Potted Flowers

Roses can be red,
Hardly ever blue,
Cut flowers don't last,
So what do you do?

Roses and other cut flowers are a common gift to let someone know you care on Valentine’s Day. This symbol of love only lasts a week or two. These spent flowers are a great addition for the compost pile. For best results, cut the stems into pieces of six inches or smaller, so they’ll degrade more quickly.

Other gifts can provide a more enduring way to show you care, don't waste the love:

  • Dried flowers; they can last for years
  • A live potted plant
  • Flower seeds or bulbs that can be planted in the warmer weather
  • A donation to an organization valued by your loved one

Reminder - Proposed Part 350 Regulations Public Comment Period

DEC filed a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking with the Department of State to add a new 6 NYCRR Part 350. The proposed regulations will implement the requirements outlined in the NYS Food Donation and Food Scraps Recycling Law enacted in 2019. The law takes effect on January 1, 2022 and requires large generators of food scraps to donate excess edible food and recycle all remaining food scraps if they are located within 25 miles of an organics recycler.

Persons wishing to comment on the proposed regulations have the opportunity to submit written comments or make a statement at one of two public comment hearing webinars.

  • Wednesday, April 7, 2021 1:00 p.m. - Register
  • Wednesday, April 7, 2021 6:00 p.m. - Register

DEC will accept written public comments through April 27, 2021: FoodScrapsLaw@dec.ny.gov.
