Position Summary

The City of Brooklyn Park's Economic Development & Housing team seeks an Intern. The successful candidate will contribute to a skilled team, strive for professional growth, and demonstrate a passion for serving the community.

The Intern will work with the Economic Development & Housing team, a motivated and active staff, and learn how development and redevelopment is done in a large suburban city.  The Intern will have the opportunity to assist on several projects including assessing business assistance programs in the region, gathering data about apartments in the City, and creating plans and ideas for new events geared toward the City's business community. The Intern's work can vary based on their particular interests, including various aspects of housing, business development, planning, research and analysis, and/or program administration.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support various housing, redevelopment and business development activities
  • Develop marketing materials to effectively promote Planning and Development programs
  • Participate in various projects within the Economic Development and Planning divisions as needed and per the interest of the intern
  • Other job duties as assigned or apparent.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Education
High school graduate or equivalent. Currently enrolled, either part-time or full-time, in undergraduate or graduate level studies or recent graduate

OR

High school graduate or equivalent and significant work history

Experience
Experience with Microsoft Office programs and applications

Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

  • Current North Hennepin Community College (NHCC) student or recent graduate
  • Current graduate or undergraduate level studies (or recent graduate) in Brooklyn Park   
  • Current involvement in community development or civic organizations and activities
  • Previous experience working with people from various cultural, socioeconomic, racial and ethnic backgrounds
  • Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Russian, Somali, Laotian, or Vietnamese language(s)

Selection Process
The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience and/or an oral examination (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions.  Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. Anticipated Hiring Wage:  $15.00 Hourly

Anticipated Work Schedule:  This is a non-exempt, non-union, six- (6) month, temporary internship position that will work up to 40 hours per week, subject to a flexible schedule.
 
Anticipated Start Date:  Start date flexible; subject to candidate availability

Regular, full-time City of Brooklyn Park employees (30 or more hours per week) are eligible for a benefits package including:
