In Case You Missed It: Secretary Granholm Speaks at the Geothermal Rising Annual Conference

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm spoke earlier this week during the opening session of the 2021 Geothermal Rising Conference, highlighting geothermal energy’s critical role in the Biden Administration’s push to secure 100% of America’s electricity from clean energy sources by 2035.

“We have to invest in 24/7 technologies in order to build a resilient, reliable, renewable grid…with the right investments and incentives, we can increase the power generated by the heat beneath our feet 47-fold by 2050,” Secretary Granholm commented. “That is enough (energy) to power the state of Texas twelve times over. And geothermal delivers well beyond the power sector—it helps reduce the carbon footprint of buildings, it saves homeowners money through direct use heating and cooling…we’re also exploring how to extract lithium from geothermal brines in the Salton Sea, which would help boost domestic supply chains for batteries and electric vehicles.”
