Check out the Fall 2021 edition of the Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO) Wind Research and Development (R&D) Newsletter! You’ll get an update on how the National Offshore Wind R&D Consortium is driving innovation in the U.S. offshore wind energy industry, plus the latest research on the big (literally) future of offshore wind, growing awareness about the environmental effects of offshore wind, an updated model that could lead to improved wind power forecasts, and more. Subscribe to learn more about WETO R&D projects, news, accomplishments, and recent publications.
DOE recently announced $13.5 million in funding for four projects that will support offshore wind siting and permitting and help reduce the impacts of offshore wind on wildlife and fisheries. The selected projects will study environmental and wildlife topics that can help advance offshore wind on both the east and west coasts of the United States.
In support of the national goal to deploy 30 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030, DOE’s Wind Energy Technologies Office has published an Atlantic Offshore Wind Transmission Literature Review and Gaps Analysis. The report summarizes publicly available transmission analyses along the Atlantic Coast as well as gaps in existing analyses, which can help inform strategies to realize the 30 GW by 2030 goal.

Events
Webinar: October 19 and 27, 2021
NAWEA is hosting a series of free webinars in lieu of its cancelled 2021 conference. WETO’s Technology Manager for Offshore Wind R&D Nate McKenzie and NREL researchers will join the Oct. 19 event to discuss advancement of the offshore wind industry. National lab researchers will join the Oct. 27 event to discuss the role of atmospheric and ocean sciences in wind energy.
Conference and Exhibition: October 13–15, 2021, Boston, MA
The American Clean Power Association is hosting this conference, which provides opportunities for the offshore wind industry to cultivate relationships and tour exhibitions with offshore wind developers and experts. Kelly Speakes-Backman, Acting Assistant Secretary and Principal Deputy Secretary for DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, provided a virtual keynote on Oct. 13, and NREL’s Matt Shields presented forecasts and info about the emerging U.S. supply chain on Oct. 14. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Alicia Mahon will present on bird radar technology and other applications for offshore monitoring on Oct. 15.
Virtual symposium: October 18–21, 2021
Organized by Idaho National Laboratory and a committee comprising national laboratories, academia, and industry, this symposium will virtually convene public and private partners to discuss how to ensure a secure and reliable flow of energy across the nation.
Virtual: November 8–10, 2021
This virtual symposium will feature presentations from researchers working on Consortium-funded projects as well as industry panels on regional supply chain solutions, dual power systems, controls and design optimization, grid integration, wildlife monitoring, digitization, data collection, artificial intelligence, and floating offshore wind platforms and mooring solutions.
Conference: November 15–18, 2021, Arlington, VA
Hosted by the Distributed Wind Energy Association, this conference convenes the distributed and community wind industry to showcase this sector of the wind industry, attend educational sessions, and network.
Tradeshow and Business Development: Dec 7–8, 2021, Salt Lake City, UT
CLEANPOWER will feature topics related to utility-scale wind, solar, storage, and transmission. The focus is to convene the technologies that make up the renewables mix—land-based wind, offshore wind, solar, storage, and transmission—and the different industry segments: manufacturers, construction firms, owner-operators, utilities, financial firms, and corporate entities.
