Statement from DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos on Denial of the Title V Permit for the Danskammer Energy Center |
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced the agency's denial of the required Title V air permit for the Danskammer Energy Center located in the town of Newburgh, Orange County. DEC conducted a comprehensive review of Danskammer's application and supporting materials, as well as the more than 4,500 public comments received on the project, before reaching this decision. DEC subjects all applications for environmental permits to an extensive and transparent review process that encourages public input at every step. Our review determined the proposed project does not demonstrate compliance with the requirements of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. The proposed project would be inconsistent with or would interfere with the statewide greenhouse gas emissions limits established in the Climate Act. Danskammer failed to demonstrate the need or justification for the proposed project notwithstanding this inconsistency. The full decision is outlined in a letter (PDF) by Daniel Whitehead, Director, Division of Environmental Permits, DEC. |
