See the progress we made to repair the high bridge in February 2022. In the past month, we installed work scaffolding, began epoxy injections to fill cracks in the concrete, started repairs on the bridge’s expansion joints, and prepared to begin post-tensioning work.
This week, we continued our focus on the interior of the bridge with more epoxy crack injections and beginning interior carbon-fiber wrapping on the west side of the bridge. We also completed more preparation work for the post-tensioning system that will be installed in the coming months. This work included core drilling holes through the bridge’s interior and positioning more forms for post-tensioning anchors.
Core drilling is a crucial step in preparing for the installation of post-tensioning cables as it creates holes for the cables to pass through the interior to the different parts of the bridge.
As we built and positioned forms for the post-tensioning components, we also installed rebar to provide added strength.
Working to measure, cut, and install strands of rebar into drilled holes for the deviator blocks that will guide the post-tensioning cables.
We also completed more work on the bridge’s expansion joints this week. We’re replacing some of these joints, which allow the different segments of the bridge to expand and contract with changes in temperature and make it stronger, and safer in the event of an earthquake.
After removing the old expansion joint, we prepare to install a new, flexible joint.
Building a drainage system on SW Webster St in Highland Park
On Saturday, we're building a natural drainage system (swale), on SW Webster St between 12th Ave SW and 15th Ave SW in the Highland Park neighborhood. This work is part of the Reconnect West Seattle Home Zone program and prioritized with the Highland Park community.
We’ll complete this work between 7:30 AM and 4 PM. This is a low-traffic street and we do not anticipate significant impacts to people traveling in the area, however, please expect construction activity and navigate the area with caution.
Fixing a lane divider on SW Spokane St
We’ll also be repairing the lane divider on SW Spokane St, near the SR-99 ramp entrance on Saturday morning. We’ll complete this work in three phases, with the first phase on Saturday from approximately 8 AM to noon.
During this work, we’ll need to close the eastbound ramp from SW Spokane St to southbound SR-99. If you are driving in the area, instead of taking the ramp to SR-99, please follow the posted detour on street-level to SR-99.
We're beginning to engage communities in developing the Seattle Transportation Plan. The plan establishes a renewed vision for the future of our streets and public spaces. Together, we’ll reimagine how we move through and enjoy Seattle’s streets.
We are partnering with community-based organizations, who have relationships with the communities they serve, to listen and ensure that the plan reflects the values and needs of everyone. Visit our blog to learn more information and see the incredible organizations we are partnering with.
Shortly after the March 2020 closure of the West Seattle Bridge, community feedback guided the creation of our Reconnect West Seattle Implementation Plan. Reconnect West Seattle is a program to support neighborhoods impacted by the West Seattle Bridge closure by improving traffic calming, pedestrian mobility, and neighborhood livability. It involves an ongoing dialogue that envisions how we can achieve a reconnected West Seattle peninsula.

Ongoing concrete strike: There is an ongoing concrete strike in the Seattle area affecting our many active construction projects. This project, and several others, have had to pause concrete work until the strike is resolved. This is a challenge, and we support a fair resolution among the parties. In the near term, we're continuing other project work and will share more about any impacts to this project as information becomes available. We remain hopeful that this issue will be resolved soon.
