DOE Announces $32 Million to Accelerate Next-Generation Building Upgrades Nationwide
Seven Teams Selected to Demonstrate Faster, Cheaper, Less Disruptive, and Low Carbon Building Renovation and Construction Techniques in Low-Income Communities Across the U.S.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Department of Energy announced $32 million to fund over 30 next-generation building retrofit projects focused on dramatically improving affordable housing. Seven selected teams will demonstrate renovation techniques that reduce disruption to tenants while upgrading the energy and environmental performance of buildings more quickly, affordably, and effectively. These techniques, like prefabricating walls and drop-in replacements for heating, cooling and hot water systems, can revolutionize construction and renovation and provide the means to decarbonize America’s 130 million buildings at the rate needed to address the climate crisis.
“We’re in an all-out sprint to beat back the climate crisis, and that race runs straight through our nation’s buildings,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “Faster construction and renovation methods that are designed to improve our nation’s supply of affordable housing, like the ones these teams will demonstrate, are the kinds of revolutionary innovations we need to Build Back Better and meet the Biden Administration’s climate goals.”
