Future Focused, Career Ready

Workforce Toolkit banner with text: Empowering Futures Preparing NC Students for the workforce.

The workforce is rapidly changing – especially here in North Carolina. As technology advances and the workforce landscape evolves, it is imperative to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed. That’s why Superintendent Truitt is re-framing what K-12 education is all about – preparing students to enroll, enlist or be employed.

Regardless of the direction a student’s career journey takes, good jobs today require additional education, priority credentials and the durable skills identified in the NC Portrait of a Graduate such as adaptability, communication, critical thinking and personal responsibility.

Truitt’s approach empowers K-12 students to build all three skills sets- academic, technical and durable, while attending NC public schools. Thus, creating the future workforce needed from the mountains to coast of North Carolina.

Tab/Accordion Items

Goal 1: Prepare our future workforce with the skills and experiences required to be successful, productive citizens, providing a robust talent pipeline that powers the State’s economic development efforts.

Goal 2: Ensure that all students have access to post-secondary pathways that align with growing, high wage careers and meet local, regional, and/or statewide industry demand for talent.

Goal 3: Assist all students and parents in making informed plans and decisions about future education and career opportunities.

Goal 4: Ensure that all students engage in career exploration and real-world learning activities throughout their K-12 journey.

Based on feedback received from the field in early 2022, DPI developed the assets below as part of a Workforce Toolkit to help students and families learn more about career pathways available during their educational journey. We hope the resources below will help students begin exploring, engaging, and experiencing career opportunities early during their K-12 experience.

A technically skilled and educated workforce is the cornerstone of a strong, healthy economy; and a highly qualified workforce begins in North Carolina’s classrooms. That’s why Superintendent Truitt partnered with the NC Chamber to create this new toolkit, to help businesses connect with North Carolina’s public schools.

With North Carolina’s rapidly changing workforce, creating a stronger, more intentional relationship between the K-12 education and business sectors has never been more vital. This Toolkit is one way to bridge that divide. Read on to learn more.
