Murals Transform the World

Governor Laura Kelly announced today that 37 rural murals were completed in 14 Kansas communities in 2022 through the Office of Rural Prosperity’s (ORP) Rural Mural and Public Art Grant Programing. These grants helped communities with fewer than 10,000 residents create murals and public art projects to beautify public gathering spaces and serve as new tourist attractions. The Kansas Arts Commission (KAC) has funded over 41 murals in 26 communities in the past few years and has 21artists on its Mural and Public Art Roster. KAC’s programs are designed to utilize artists and arts organizations to increase community vibrancy and provide space for artistic expression and public engagement.

“These beautiful, creative and artistic murals help personalize the communities where they were created. Kansas is such a special place and as our Rural Mural program continues to grow, I look forward to how it will showcase the uniqueness that each community brings to our state.”

Governor Laura Kelly

The Office of Rural Prosperity: Rural Murals

The Office of Rural Prosperity (ORP) advocates for and promotes rural Kansas and focuses on efforts designed to aid rural improvements. This program provides funding for communities with populations of 15,000 or less to reinvigorate spaces by creating new murals or public art that incorporate the community’s history, culture, heritage, tourism, or other community led art piece.  This mural and public art grant program is intended to support projects in rural communities that are immediately ready to begin work on their mural, with community engagement, location selection, site approvals, and muralist selection.

Applications are open for the Office of Rural Prosperity rural murals.

KAC Mural Making

Kansas is seeing an exciting increase in the creation of new murals and interest in the impact of large-scale public art projects for thriving communities across the state. Presented by the Kansas Arts Commission, in partnership with Community Development, the Office of Rural Prosperity, Kansas Main Street, and Kansas Tourism, Commerce is committed to helping communities through financial support, technical assistance, and process guidance as they imagine new projects through the Mural Making initiative.
