Saturday, March 29: As a cold front approaches the Flint Hills during the afternoon, moderate mixing heights will promote ventilation. Furthermore, moderate to gusty southerly to southwesterly winds through the afternoon and early evening will aid dispersion. However, these winds will also transport smoke from potential fires in the northeastern and southeastern Flint Hills into Topeka, while smoke from potential fires in Sedgwick County will impact Wichita. Mixing heights will decrease by 8 p.m., trapping smoke near the surface. Additionally, winds will shift to westerly to west-southwesterly, which will carry smoke from potential fires in the northeastern, north-central, and west-central Flint Hills into Topeka and Kansas City. In the far southwestern Flint Hills, additional smoke from potential fires will be transported into Wichita.
Sunday, March 30: Despite low mixing heights hindering ventilation, north-northwesterly winds behind the departing cold front will aid dispersion. However, these winds will also transport smoke from potential fires in the far northeastern Flint Hills into Topeka during the afternoon and early evening. Potential smoke impacts are not expected for the rest of the major metropolitan areas. |
