Pathways to resilience that cross over into occupational settings
Like other areas of the country, Ohio has seen a rise in mental illness, suicide, and deaths related to drug overdose over the past decade. The COVID pandemic has further exacerbated these challenges. As called for by Governor DeWine in his 2023 State of the State address and supported by the legislature in the state budget, Ohio must be the model in helping our citizens overcome mental health challenges so they improve mental and physical health, attain a good-paying job, complete an education, support a family, and contribute to our communities. We must better understand?risk?– the root causes leading to mental illness and substance use disorders – and?resilience?– the ability to adapt and grow in the face of adversity.

Why transportation safety matters in the workplace
Workplaces play an important role in educating drivers and saving lives. In addition to the potential for loss of life, the cost of crashes, including wage and productivity losses, medical expenses, administrative expenses, vehicle damage, and insurance costs, can be catastrophic. Reducing crashes is important to employees and can be a cost-saving measure as well. A safety culture that promotes safe driving behaviors can decrease loss and save lives.

This presentation explores the crucial role of critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving in saving lives. In this presentation we'll share how visual literacy from art education can improve hazard identification and risk management. By combining technology with human skills, we achieve the most effective safety solutions.

Smart barrel for advanced driver notifications
This session will present findings and progress on the development of a smart construction barrel that will provide highly accurate data on the edge of a work zone. This data can then be transmitted to the cloud and used by drivers in mapping apps or directly transmitted to the driver via C-V2X. The goal is to provide improved safety and awareness around work zones.

Construction or Maintenance? When Safety Regulations Collide
Despite OSHA’s ongoing efforts to reduce fatalities in the construction industry, the results have not met expectations. This session will explore how applying OSHA’s General Industry Standards—particularly Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)—can strengthen construction safety programs. Participants will review LOTO regulations, energy source identification, and strategies for integrating energy control procedures into construction operations. Through fatality case studies, images of hazardous conditions, and real-world applications, we will examine how general industry regulations can enhance construction safety. The session will also introduce a newly published guidance document designed to help construction companies implement a “hazardous task analysis” to proactively identify and mitigate risks. Attendees will leave with practical insights for improving training, procedures, and overall workplace safety.

Machine safety requirements for fluid power
Machine safety requirements apply to all energy sources. A risk assessment and safety control system must include pneumatics and hydraulics. ANSI Z244, B11.0, B11.19, and B11.26 work together to create a safe machine for lockout, alternative measures, and safety control systems. Fluid power has specific requirements and best practices. Oxygen Concentrating Self Rescuer (OCSR)
This session will introduce the Oxygen Concentrating Self Rescuer (OCSR). The OCSR is a new rescue breathing apparatus for survivors of explosions and/or fires in underground mines, first responders fighting fires, and others trapped by fires inside confined spaces. Reduce Accidents with Impairment Detection Technology
Impairment detection technology is a leading indicator of driver alertness, assessing readiness before shifts begin. Unlike in-cab cameras, which provide lagging indicators, this technology addresses all impairment sources, including fatigue and stress. Validated by the Transportation Research Board, with millions of assessments over 20 years, it helps companies meet regulatory requirements and reduces safety incidents by 23%, ensuring safer roads and a more engaged workforce.

Life happens. Not just work, but our lives outside of work can cause stress, anxiety, and issues that we must deal with to be healthy and happy. Often, our own self-care takes a backseat to taking care of others, completing our work responsibilities, and just making it through the day. This course reminds us that to take care of others, we must first, take care of ourselves. The various possible physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, and behavioral effects are discussed. Sensor arrays for inhalation hazard mapping
New technologies are on the horizon to reduce inhalation risks for Ohio's workers. Wearable technology that is smaller, faster, lighter, and more sensitive is enabled by a combination of new materials and advances in electronics. This technology enables every worker to passively make real-time measurements of air quality while performing other tasks. Air quality information from networks of wearable sensors provides industrial hygienists with the information required to monitor exposure and improve worker safety.

Safety, psychology, and metrics: Oh my!
Have we taken safety too far? Are we going in the wrong direction? Recently, we’ve seen an increase in the number of pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. Traffic fatalities rose to a 16-year high in 2021 and remained essentially flat in 2022, outpacing increases in the total number of miles driven. On top of all that, we’ve seen a recent increase in fatal accidents in U.S. industry, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Clearly, we must do something differently.
