Due to current testing space limitations, candidates may need to travel to a test site to take this examination. Candidates will be notified of their test site location on their admission notice.

Appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester Counties will receive an additional $3,087 annual downstate adjustment. Appointees who work in Dutchess, Orange, or Putnam Counties will receive an additional $1,543 annual mid-Hudson adjustment.

Minimum Qualifications

On or before May 4, 2024, you must have:

Either 1. three years of experience with responsibility for the procurement, issuance, stocking, and inventory control of a wide variety of automotive, truck, agricultural, industrial, military, and/or construction equipment parts in a facility that uses computer software to track and monitor operations and maintain records;

Or 2. one year of experience described above in #1 AND two years of experience as an automotive mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive systems;

Or 3. 30 college semester credit hours in a program leading to a degree in automotive technology, diesel technology, automotive repair technology or diesel repair technology AND two years of experience described above in #1;

Or 4. 60 college semester credit hours in a program leading to a degree in automotive technology, diesel technology, automotive repair technology or diesel repair technology AND one year of experience described above in #1.

IMPORTANT: If you are using college coursework to qualify for this examination, you MUST provide additional course information on your application demonstrating you have earned the required number of credits. You must include the name and location of the college, the course title, and number of credits earned for each course. You can add this information into your online application or attach to your paper application. Failure to provide this information may result in the disapproval of your application to take the examination.

The Positions: These positions exist in the New York State Department of Transportation and are located throughout New York State.

Duties

As a Motor Equipment Storeskeeper, you would be responsible for the receipt, storage, and issuance of a large variety of mechanical parts and tools. You would prepare estimates of annual requirements and maintain a perpetual inventory; meet with vendors regarding price, availability, and quality of parts and materials; and procure materials from contract suppliers and select sources for items not on contract. You would expedite procurement and payment for parts subject to the conditions of manufacturers warranties and direct the preparation of purchase orders and requisitions. You may be required to supervise staff assigned to the mechanical stores operation.

Note: A promotion examination will also be held for these positions. If you are eligible for appointment from a promotion list, you may not be appointed in your own agency from the list resulting from this examination open to the public. Although promotion examinations are being held, it is expected that appointments will be made as a result of the open competitive exam.

Subject of Examination

To be considered for appointment to this title, you must pass the multiple-choice test. The multiple-choice test evaluates your knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in the following areas:

  1. Automotive and heavy equipment terminology and identification of parts - These questions will test for, but will not necessarily be limited to, knowledge of common terms used in the automotive and heavy equipment repair field, the ability to identify parts in pictures or written descriptions, and the ability to use standard industry references to look up parts.
  2. Working with office records - These questions test your ability to work with office records. The test consists of two or more sets of questions, each set concerning a different problem. Typical record keeping problems might involve the organization or collation of numerical data from several sources; maintaining a record system using running balances; or completion of a table summarizing data using totals, subtotals, averages and percents. You should bring with you a hand-held battery- or solar-powered calculator for use on this test. You will not be permitted to use the calculator function of your cell phone.
  3. Understanding and interpreting written material - These questions test for the ability to understand and interpret written material. You will be presented with brief reading passages and will be asked questions about the passages. You should base your answers to the questions only on what is presented in the passages and not on what you may happen to know about the topic.
  4. Supplies and services control - These questions cover issues common to purchasing and storeskeeping titles at a journey level. These questions will test candidates' ability to check supplies and services records for accuracy and completeness as well as their ability to extract specific information from these records including identification, usage and needs based on the information that is provided in these records. In addition, these questions will test candidates' ability to exercise judgment in making decisions that respond to the identification, usage or needs that would be considered acceptable and correct under generally accepted practices.
  5. Supervision -These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices employed in planning, organizing, and controlling the activities of a work unit toward predetermined objectives. The concepts covered, usually in a situational question format, include such topics as assigning and reviewing work; evaluating performance; maintaining work standards; motivating and developing subordinates; implementing procedural change; increasing efficiency; and dealing with problems of absenteeism, morale, and discipline.

Your final score must be 70 or higher in order to pass. Your final score on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime Veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits.

Admission To The Test: If approved for a multiple-choice test, you will receive an admission notice which will indicate your assigned test date and the way your test will be administered. Your test may be administered with paper and pencil or online at a state test site using a state-provided Chromebook. You cannot request to change your scheduled day or request a specific type of test administration.

Applicants are required to have a Personal NY.gov account and keep their email address up to date. The Department of Civil Service and other state agencies will communicate with you through email correspondence. This may include notification of your application status, your test arrangements, examination results, and canvassing you for interest in appointment. If you have applied to take a multiple-choice test announced by either one or several local jurisdictions (county, town, city) scheduled to be held on the same test date as this multiple-choice test, you must notify each of the local jurisdictions no later than two weeks before the test date to make arrangements for taking all tests at one test site. All tests will be held at the state examination center. Cell Phones or Electronic/Communication Devices at the Test Site
