Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) is a 5-year, $5-billion federal discretionary program intended to reduce transportation fatalities and serious injuries on our roadways. The program is structured so that funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law cover up to 80% of project costs, and local public agencies cover the remaining project amount.
USDOT’s Notice of Funding Opportunity for 2024 is now open. Planning and Demonstration Grant applicants may apply by any of these three deadlines:
- • Thursday, April 4, 2024, 4:00 PM (CST)
- • Thursday, May 16, 2024, 4:00 PM (CST)
- • Thursday, August 29, 2024, 4:00 PM (CST)
Implementation Grant applications must be submitted by Thursday, May 16, 2024. Unsuccessful Implementation Grant applicants may apply for a Planning and Demonstration Grant application in the final round on August 29, 2024.
In 2022 and 2023, the Kansas Department of Transportation's SS4A Match Pilot Program covered part or all of the local match requirements. In 2024, those interested in applying for SS4A and receiving an in-state match should apply through the Build Kansas Fund. Visit the Application Webinar and slides to learn more.

To date, Kansas applicants have been awarded over $14.7 million from the U.S. DOT and over $2.9 million from KDOT to improve safety on local roads. Currently, over 80 percent of Kansas's population lives in areas that will be covered by comprehensive safety action plans (see Kansas SS4A Recipients).
