Best Practices for Providing Mental Health and Addiction Care Services in School Settings

Description

Schools and school systems are unique settings for the provision of mental health services as the environment is primarily set up for educational purposes, not therapeutic ones. The students are minors and interact with a plethora of other people within the setting, including teachers, paraprofessionals, school counselors, school social workers, school nurses, their peers, and parents/guardians at home. This can bring up complex issues related to confidentiality and disclosure for the mental health professional. This class explores the FERPA and HIPAA guidelines and introduces best practices and ethical guidelines for effective mental health service provision within an educational setting.

Learning Objectives

  • Decipher distinctions between FERPA and HIPAA
  • Evaluate confidentiality issues with teachers and parents
  • Compare and contrast ethical guidelines for different roles in the school setting
  • Examine the latest literature on mental health support in schools
