Christmas lights events across Kirklees

The tinkle of festive music is filling the shops, the air is getting colder, and pretty soon the streets will be aglow with light as we get ready for Christmas.

Be the first to see your local town light up by visiting one of the fantastic light switch on events being organised by local communities and businesses across Kirklees.

Huddersfield Christmas Lights Switch On
Saturday 16 November, 1pm-6pm, Piazza Shopping Centre

Come and join the Piazza Shopping Centre & the Pulse’s Mylo & Rosie to switch on Huddersfield’s Christmas Lights, with guest star appearances from S Club 3 and a Santa meet and greet.

Honley Christmas Lights Switch On
Saturday 16 November, 3pm – 8pm, Honley Park
Parade from Church Street and Westgate at 6.45pm

Honley village is set for a fabulous festive event to celebrate its Christmas lights switch on organised by the Honley Business Association. Entertainment includes a fabulous performance by headline act Lucy Milburn, semi-finalist of The Voice 2018, who wowed the crowds at last year’s event. Food for all, drinks hot & cold, fairground rides, hook a duck, raffle, tombola, stage entertainment all day and a firework finale.

Cleckheaton Christmas Festival and Market
16 November at 9am – 7pm Cleckheaton Town Centre

Cleckheaton’s Victorian Christmas Festival comprises a wonderful Christmas Market of over 75 stalls full of foods, a wide range of seasonal gift ideas for everyone including speciality foods, toys, jewellery, Christmas cards and festive decorations.
There is entertainment throughout the day with traditional brass bands, fairground attractions, mulled wine, roast chestnuts, and street entertainers, culminating with the Christmas Lights Switch On.

Holmfirth Christmas Lights Celebration
Saturday 23 November, 4.15pm–5.30pm, Holmfirth Town Centre.

A community celebration with a participative lantern parade along Huddersfield Road and Victoria Street and then music and entertainment in Norridge Bottom in the centre of Holmfirth. Music from Hade Edge Band, Valley Beats, Holme Valley Youth Choir and a fire display!

HeckmondLIGHT
Saturday 23 November, 4pm-8pm, Green Park, Heckmondwike

An annual outdoor family festival coinciding with the festive lights switch-on which transforms Heckmondwike’s town centre into a weekend of magical light and wonder. Last year, visitors to HeckmondLIGHT explored light-art installations; lost themselves in ‘Invanity’, a kaleidoscopic world of mirrors; danced to music from a Portaloo-converted human jukebox; and explored a cardboard labyrinth in the old Market Hall. Batley Christmas Lights Switch On Event
Saturday 30 November, 3pm – 6.30pm, Batley Market Square

Enjoy a variety of entertainment on the stage area; lots of market stalls selling seasonal goods; a small funfair with children’s rides and the ever-popular Snow Globe. Santa’s in his grotto to give well-behaved children a present before the lights are switched on at 6pm by the Deputy Mayor and guests.

Slaithwaite Christmas Lights Switch On
Saturday 30 November at 4pm, Slaithwaite Village

Events are taking place throughout the village including at the venues Globe Arts, Slaithwaite Civic Hall, St. James Church and Waves between 10am and 4pm. Entertainment begins around the tree opposite the Shoulder of Mutton pub at 4pm. The switch-on takes place at 5pm with a fireworks display and a guest appearance from a special visitor.

Milnsbridge Christmas Switch On
Saturday 30 November at 5pm, Bridgecroft, Market Street, Milnsbridge

Celebrations in Milnsbridge culminate at 5pm when the Christmas tree lights are switched on by a Huddersfield Giant & the Giant’s mascot. Events start earlier in the afternoon with a Christmas Fair at the Village Hall offering stalls, games and Father Christmas in his Grotto. At 3.15pm, the Mayor of Kirklees arrives to enjoy the Fair and tour the Milnsbridge shops to judge the Christmas Window Competition before joining the Switch-On. Following the Switch-On, Crow Lane School Choir and the Golcar Band lead the crowd to sing Christmas Carols whilst Father Christmas spreads joy – and sweets!

Denby Dale Christmas Light Switch On
Saturday 30 November at 6pm, White Hart, Denby Dale

Join Santa on his sleigh and enjoy performances from the Scissett Youth Band, Denby Dale Ladies Choir and a children’s choir before the switching on of the tree lights at 6:30pm.

Birkenshaw Christmas Fayre and Light Switch On
Sunday 1 December, 2pm-5pm, locations around Birkenshaw

At 4.30pm, the winner of the ‘Design a Light’ Competition from Birkenshaw Primary School, along with Father Christmas, switches on the display which lights up the main part of Bradford Road running through the village. Throughout the afternoon, buy from many of Birkenshaw’s small businesses with stalls selling fantastic gifts and Christmas products. Father Christmas is around all afternoon to say hello to children.

Mirfield Christmas Lights
Sunday 1 December, 2pm-6pm, Mirfield Library and the Co-op, Huddersfield Road.

The Mirfield Christmas Lights Switch on is an annual event organised by Mirfield Town Council, in association with local businesses. The event includes a funfair located in the town car park, at the rear of the library, with a live music stage within the Co-op. There are also craft stalls and refreshment outlets within the area.

Skelmanthorpe Christmas Light Switch On
Sunday 1 December, 3.30pm, The Triangle, Skelmanthorpe.

After the success of last year’s event, Skelmanthorpe is going for it again! So come along and get into the festive spirit. See Santa on his sleigh; listen to the Skelmanthorpe Brass Band community, Skelmanthorpe Male Voice Choir, children from the two Skelmanthorpe schools, Rainbows and other local groups sing Christmas songs and do a countdown to our tree lights switch on. Local shops and bars will be open with festive food and drink.

Birstall Lights Switch On
Tuesday 3 December, 3pm-7pm, Birstall Market Place.

Lots for children to do including a fabulous face painter in the library with glitter tattoos, jewellery hair accessories and a children’s entertainer with balloon modelling. In the Market Place you will find a fairground, various stalls, Christmas gifts and Birstall memorabilia. Santa is in his Grotto from 3pm until 5.15pm before he arrives on his wonderful brightly lit sleigh at 6pm ready for the blessing of the lights.

Roberttown Christmas Lights Switch On
Friday 6 December, 5pm–7.30pm, Roberttown Village

Roberttown Christmas lights are an eagerly awaited feature of village life. The switch on evening includes Santa’s grotto, Christmas market, funfair rides, Christmas tree festival and much more.

Dewsbury Christmas Lights
Saturday 7 December, 12pm–7pm, Market Place

Lots of traditional entertainment, sometimes with an unusual twist, with local schools and groups combining with local and not so local entertainers. Take advantage of special offers from local businesses as well as a community market with homemade craft products for Christmas shoppers and community groups showcasing their activities. Everything comes together in a big finale and Lantern Parade before the big Lights Switch On. An opportunity for you to visit Dewsbury’s traditional Saturday market, have a bite to eat, browse the Community Market in Market Place and experience the changing music genres through the afternoon.

Marsden Christmas Lights
Saturday 7 December, 1pm to 6.30pm, Marsden Mechanics Hall

Pop into the Mechanics Hall and Library from 1pm until 5.45pm before enjoying the spectacular lights switch on outside at 6pm. This is followed by a fire dance show from Hellfyre Magpie. Santa is around all day in the hall where there is also a Christmas market and performances from many local singing and dancing groups.
