The Iowa Insurance Division is responsible for issuing licenses or authority for many types of regulated individuals dealing with insurance related products.
Certain individuals may be prohibited from working in the business of insurance.
Insurance Producers
Individuals interested in becoming either a resident or non-resident insurance producer licensed in the state of Iowa need to apply through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) online system. Those wishing to become a resident insurance producer licensed in the state of Iowa must successfully pass the appropriate Iowa producer licensing exam for that specific line of authority.
To register for the examination, please contact Pearson Vue at www.pearsonvue.com or 877-540-5825. If you successfully pass the Iowa producer licensing exam, your test results will be electronically submitted to the NIPR online system. Please allow up to three business days for the exam results to transfer to the NIPR online system. Exam results are valid for 90 days. Individuals that are interested in obtaining a variable line of authority also need an Iowa securities license or to have passed the Series 6 or 7 and Series 63 or 66 FINRA exams necessary to be approved.
To add additional lines of authority, a resident or non-resident insurance producer licensed in the state of Iowa need to apply through the NIPR online system. Resident insurance producers wishing to add a line of authority must successfully pass the appropriate Iowa producer licensing exam for that specific line of authority.
Insurance producer examinations are now available in an online format through OnVUE online proctoring by PearsonVUE. OnVUE provides a seamless testing experience with a simple download of the application and self check-in process. Candidates provide their own computer and a private room to take the exam, during which theyβre monitored by a live proctor through the webcam and microphone to safeguard the integrity of the exam. In many instances, unlicensed personnel assist licensed insurance producers. Both the licensed insurance producer and the unlicensed personnel need to be aware of what unlicensed personnel may or may not do.

Public Adjusters
Individuals interested in becoming either a resident or non-resident public adjuster licensed in the state of Iowa need to apply through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) online system. Individuals wishing to become a resident public adjuster licensed in the state of Iowa must successfully pass the appropriate licensing exam. To register for the examination, please contact Pearson Vue at www.pearsonvue.com or 877-540-5825. If you successfully pass the licensing exam, your test results will be electronically submitted to the NIPR online system. Please allow up to three business days for the exam results to transfer to the NIPR online system. Exam results are valid for 90 days.
During the application process through the NIPR online system, you will also need to submit evidence of financial responsibility, your customer contract, and the public adjuster checklist and attestation.

Navigators
Individuals interested in becoming a licensed Iowa navigator must submit to the Iowa Insurance Division a completed application for Iowa Navigator License, a copy of their Federal Marketplace Certification, proof of successfully passing the Navigator exam though Pearson Vue, and the license fee (check or money order payable to the Iowa Insurance Division). All active Iowa navigators must be currently affiliated with a navigator entity holding a current federal navigator grant.

Viatical Settlement Brokers
To be considered for licensure as a viatical settlement broker pursuant to Iowa Code section 508E.3, a person must file a completed viatical settlement broker license application, pay an application fee in the amount of $100, and submit all documents as required in the viatical broker application. In addition to submitting the application and fee the applicant must provide proof of one of the following:
- The applicant has taken and passed an examination on viatical and life settlement contracts required by another state insurance department and currently holds a license as a viatical settlement broker from that state; or
- The applicant has passed the Iowa Viatical Settlement examination. Examination results are valid for 90 days after the date of the examination. If the applicant fails to apply for licensure within 90 days after passing the examination, the examination results shall be void.
