States reports 49 new COVID-19 cases. One of them is in Juneau.

July 8, 2020 – News

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services reports today one new nonresident case of COVID-19 in Juneau. The person is a visitor to Juneau. The nonresident case is part of 49 new cases statewide – 40 Alaska residents and 9 nonresidents.

Cumulatively, Juneau has had six nonresident cases of COVID-19, one of which is active, and 46 resident cases. The nonresident case reported on July 3 was determined to be a resident, which accounts for the cumulative number going up without a reported new case. Of that 46 total, one case is active, 43 have recovered, and two are deceased. Within Juneau, Public Health Nurses are keeping track of 47 close contacts – individuals who have been within six feet of a confirmed case for at least 10-15 minutes and are now quarantining.

Alaska has had 1,226 cumulative resident cases – 646 are active – and a total of 248 nonresidents. The state reported a new death yesterday; 17 deaths have now been attributed to Alaska.

Besides practicing basic preventive measures like handwashing, wearing a face covering, and social distancing, you can minimize your risk for getting COVID-19 by avoiding:

  • Being in an enclosed space
  • Being in a crowd or being unable to physically distance yourself from others
  • Having longer interactions with people outside your household
  • Being around forceful exhalations, like coughing, yelling, or singing
