Cars packed the parking lot at Creative Suitland to load up on groceries and a hot meal as part of the county executive’s Stand Up and Deliver program.

It was one of five locations where a food giveaway took place.

“There has been a real food insecurity issue created by COVID. We’ve had over 125,000 newly unemployed individuals in Prince George’s County,” said Angela Alsobrooks.

At the end of May she launched the food program with United Way of the National Capital Area.

“The need and answering the need is who we are. We were built for this, but I will tell you as an individual, I don’t think there’s anyone who can see the amount of need and see it go on as long as it has at the level that it has and not be affected,” said Rosie Allen-Herring the organization’s CEO.

Alsobrooks says 600 boxes of food were ready to go out with another 400 hot meals provided by Henry’s Soul Cafe.

For co-owner, Bernard Brooks, this opportunity came right on time.

“[COVID-19] definitely slowed down our daily sales quite a bit and this fills the gap. We don’t have to lay people off. We can keep them employed,” said Brooks.

The county executive says the program will continue through the end of the year with an additional 9 locations coming online.
