Canyon Ferry Wildlife Management Area

Canyon Ferry
Canyon Ferry WMA is managed to provide habitat for the diversity of wildlife species that utilize the area and to provide for public enjoyment of those resources.
  1. The Canyon Ferry Wildlife Management Area (CFWMA) encompassing approximately 5,920 acres is located just north of Townsend in Broadwater County, MT where the Missouri River dumps into Canyon Ferry Reservoir. The CFWMA is somewhat unique in that it was created in 1957 by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) and the then Montana Department of Fish & Game. The CFWMA is mostly Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) administered property which FWP manages through a long-term management agreement with the BOR. A small portion of the CFWMA is owned by FWP. The CFWMA is comprised of a combination of agricultural leases, waterfowl ponds, and associated lands that are actively managed by FWP for waterfowl, pheasants and other upland game birds, big game species (primarily white-tailed deer and moose), and nongame birds and wildlife to provide various compatible year round wildlife related recreational opportunities including hunting.
