About the archives centre

Medway Archives Centre aims to help everyone discover the stories of Medway’s people and places.

Many of our visitors come to research their family history, the history of their house or other buildings, or the history and geography of the local area. Others visit for educational research, or to find inspiration for creative projects. We can also help you to discover information about the social, literary, economic, and governance history of Medway.

We can give advice about how you can care for your own archives and printed material. You can also add to Medway’s archives by depositing or donating material.

We hold archival and published records from the geographical area covered by Medway Council (the towns of Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, and Rainham, the surrounding villages, and the Hoo Peninsula), and also material from the parishes within the Archdeaconry of Rochester. Much of this material is unique to this centre.
