2021 ECO-SCHOOLS RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, the Fairfax County Public Schools Get2Green program began in 2009 to support student-led and school-based environmental stewardship in our schools and has grown to have support from most departments across Fairfax County Public Schools including Instructional Services, Food and Nutrition, Facilities and Maintenance, and Design and Construction; and

 

WHEREAS, much of this work is carried out through Get2Green’s Ignite partnership with the National Wildlife Federation; and

 

WHEREAS, students at 139 Eco-Schools in Fairfax County have conducted audits and developed action plans to improve the sustainability of their schools on such environmental pathways as Consumption and Waste, Energy, Schoolyard Habitat, and Sustainable Food; and

 

WHEREAS, teachers, staff, and students in 52 Fairfax County Public Schools have earned awards from Eco-Schools by taking action to improve the sustainability of their schools and communities while developing Portrait of a Graduate skills; and

 

WHEREAS, there is a tremendous opportunity to reach children about ecological sustainability, environmental health and nutrition; meet math, science and social studies standards; integrate environmental education into curricula; and support students to become leaders in making their own school a healthier and more ecologically friendly place;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Fairfax County School Board recognizes the contributions and excellent work by students, teachers, administrators, custodians, staff, and parents in pursuit of the Get2Green goals to provide healthier, more environmentally sustainable schools and develop students as ethical and global citizens.
