The Saint Paul – Ramsey County Emergency Rental Assistance Program is now closed 

Renters who submitted an application prior to the Friday, April 22, 2022 5:00 p.m. deadline will continue to have their applications processed, subject to availability of funds. Processing time is approximately 30 days.

Renters who have applied for help through a COVID-19 emergency rental assistance program cannot be evicted for nonpayment of rent through June 1, 2022.

RentHelpMN

RentHelpMN is closed to new applications.

  • Renters who submitted a RentHelpMN application before the Friday, January 28, 2022 at 9:00 p.m. deadline will continue to have their application processed, subject to availability of funds. Renters do not need to call 211 unless they have an immediate question.
  • Renters already helped through RentHelpMN or who had their application withdrawn after the January 28 deadline need to complete a new application by 5 p.m. on April 22, 2022 to the Saint Paul - Ramsey County Rent Assistance Program if additional assistance is needed.
    • Note: Qualifying renters may only receive a maximum of 18 months of emergency rent assistance across all rental assistance programs.

Eviction Moratorium Update

A bill overturning Governor Walz’s executive orders preventing statewide rental housing evictions went into effect on June 30, 2021. This started an off-ramp process from the COVID-19 eviction moratorium.

Eviction Moratorium Off-Ramp Timeline

  • June 30, 2021 – Landlords can give notices of lease termination or nonrenewal of lease to households that have materially violated the lease (other than nonpayment of rent). Landlords can also begin the process of evicting tenants who are behind on rent, eligible for a COVID-19 emergency rental assistance program, but refuse to apply or comply with the application process.

  • July 14, 2021 – Evictions can be filed for households that have materially violated their leases (other than nonpayment of rent).

  • August 13, 2021 – Landlords can terminate leases of renters who are behind on rent and are not eligible for a COVID-19 emergency assistance program.

  • September 12, 2021 – Landlords can file evictions against renters who are behind on rent and are not eligible for a COVID-19 emergency rental assistance program.

  • October 12, 2021 – All restrictions on lease terminations and eviction actions are lifted except that landlords cannot file or proceed with an eviction action against a household that has a pending application with a COVID-19 emergency rental assistance program.

  • June 1, 2022 – All restrictions on eviction actions are lifted.
