OUR REASON FOR BEING
The U.S. is facing unprecedented rates of teen depression, suicide ideation, and death by suicide. 70% of youth in the U.S. stop playing organized sports by the age of 13 because, “it’s just not fun anymore.”
This shift away from organized sports at a critical developmental moment in teenagers’ lives is particularly concerning. Skateboarding has become a mechanism for adolescents and teenagers to stay active and find community - if they can afford it.
Super Skate Posse removes the cost barrier of entry to allow access to these benefits to children in woefully underserved communities nationwide, creating bonds of friendship between kids of all backgrounds, ethnicities, genders.
We tour the country, giving complete skateboards, clothing, skate shoes and protective equipment to underserved kids at events hosted by pro skaters who will introduce the basics of skateboarding, engaging the local community and providing mentorship and encouragement. Ongoing engagement and connections with elders in their local community forms a support network; a skate family.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The mental health and wellness benefits of skateboarding are undisputed. Although the act of skateboarding is between the person and the board, there is a global community of support. In 2020 Super Skate Posse was born with the primary goal of bringing these benefits to youth in underserved communities by providing the very basics for participation: a board, skate shoes and a helmet. Although these are the basics, acquiring them is cost prohibitive and can run at minimum $300 for entry into the community.
So often outdoor recreation, like skate parks, are put in underserved neighborhoods as a way to help children get outdoors and experience the health and wellness benefits of skateboarding. But, more often than not, the youth in those neighborhoods aren't provided the tools to take advantage of these resources and can't get access on their own because of the cost barrier to entry (nearly $750 or more for a board + shoes + helmet + lessons).
Through our work, we are providing a new outlet and global community to a new group of participants at no cost to them.
