Elrich Seeks Applicants for Animal Services Advisory Committee

County Executive Marc Elrich is seeking applicants to fill two vacancies on the Animal Services Advisory Committee for one representative of an animal rescue organization in the County, and one licensed veterinarian with pet and wildlife experience.  

The 14-member Committee is composed of 11 voting members and 3 ex officio non-voting members, appointed by the Executive and confirmed by the Council, which include: one licensed veterinarian; one person with expertise in animal or pet behavior; one person with experience in recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers; one person designated by the Montgomery County Partners for Animal Well-Being (MCPAW); one person designated by the Second Chance Wildlife Center; one person each representing a non-profit organization that provides animal fostering services in the County, the Montgomery County Cat Coalition, the Friends of Montgomery County Animals or a similar organization in the County, an animal rescue organization in the County; and two public members who live or work in the County. There are three ex officio non-voting members from the Office of Animal Services: the Director or designee, the lead veterinarian, and the budget operations manager.

The Committee must work with the Office of Animal Services to advise the Executive and the Council on issues and recommendations for animal care and welfare; animal rescue; animal fostering and adoption; control of the animal population; animal bite prevention; zoonotic disease transmission; educating the public on safely coexisting with wildlife; best practices for animal shelters; and recruiting volunteers for the County animal shelter; and the operation of the Office.  

Members serve three-year terms. Public members are eligible for reimbursement for travel and dependent care for in-person meetings attended. The Committee holds hybrid meetings, in person at the Office of Animal Services in Derwood, and simultaneously by videoconference, the first Thursday evening of each month at 7:00 PM.

Applicants of diverse backgrounds, professions, genders, geography, abilities, ethnicities, and ages are encouraged to apply. Members of County boards, committees and commissions may not serve on more than one such group at a time. Members must complete training on the Maryland Open Meetings Act, Montgomery County Ethics Law, and basic parliamentary procedure. The County Executive’s appointments are subject to confirmation by the County Council. Applications will be forwarded to the Council for confirmation. The deadline for application is May 17, 2024.
