State obtains three-year supply of mifepristone ahead of potential judicial decision to limit access

Washington state purchased a three-year supply of mifepristone, an abortion medication used safely for more than two decades. In March, Governor Jay Inslee directed the state Department of Corrections, using its existing pharmacy license, to purchase the medication. The state received the shipment last week.

This action is part of the commitment by Inslee and Attorney General Bob Ferguson to protect access to medical abortion. Ferguson is helping lead a multi-state lawsuit aiming to protect access to the medication. He joined the governor and state legislators in introducing legislation authorizing the state Department of Corrections to distribute or sell the medication to licensed health providers across the state.
