The way you vote is changing

A full list of candidates standing in the local elections on 4 May 2023 is now available.

The deadline to submit nominations closed at 4pm on Tuesday 4 April. The list of candidates standing in each of the 23 Kirklees wards can be found on the statement of persons nominated 2023 webpage.

A third of all 69 seats are up for election with one seat in all of Kirklees’ 23 wards going to the polls. There is also an additional seat in the Ashbrow Ward, making a total of 24 seats up for election. The council currently has a Labour majority with Labour (36 seats), Conservative (18 seats), Liberal Democrat (8 seats), Green (3 seats), Holme Valley Independents (3 seats) and other Independents (1 seat).

Parish and Town Council elections are also taking place. If contested, you may also have a Parish/Town Council election in your area.

Of the 24 district seats up for election this year, Labour hold 11, Conservative 5, Liberal Democrats 4, Independents 3 and Green 1.

The election count will be taking place on Friday 5 May from 8.45am. We will announce results live throughout the day on our Facebook and Twitter pages. And, we will publish a full round-up of the results on our website.

Are you registered to vote? 

To vote in May’s local elections, you need to be registered to vote. The deadline to apply is Midnight on Monday 17 April 2023. To find out if you’re already registered, or to register to vote now visit the elections section of our website.

You will need to bring ID to vote

For the first time, voters across the country will need to show photographic ID when voting at polling stations across the area. We are urging Kirklees residents to make sure they are ready to vote on 4 May by checking they have an accepted form of ID.

Accepted forms of ID include:

  • A UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport
  • A UK, EEA or Commonwealth drivers’ licence
  • some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass or an Oyster 60+ card.

Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

Want to vote by post? 

If you don’t want to or can’t visit a Polling Station to vote this year, you can vote by post. The deadline to submit a completed application form to vote by post is 5pm on Tuesday 18 April 2023.

Do you need somebody to vote on your behalf?

You can also apply for somebody to vote on your behalf, also known as a proxy vote.

The deadline to apply to vote by proxy is 5pm on Tuesday 25 April 2023.
